Introduction Thalassemia is one of the most common inherited monogenic diseases in the world. It is estimated that nearly 1–5% of the global population are carriers of a thalassemia genetic mutation (1). Thalassemia is known to be highly prevalent in a zone that extends from the Mediterranean region through sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East to the Indian subcontinent and East and Southeast Asia (2).
