Science funding could contribute more towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Science–practitioner partnerships illustrate how a patient and outcome-based approach could improve water security for millions of vulnerable people.

1. Introduction Industrial and domestic pollution and unsafe drinking water services affect large areas across the world, with the most vulnerable people facing the greatest risks to their lives and livelihoods [1]. Advances in water security policy and practice are emerging from governments, companies, and communities. Ensuring access to water and sanitation is included among the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 [2,3].
