The historical misuse of electric convulsive therapy (ECT) and its depiction in Hollywood film and horror could be responsible for people’s resistance to treating depression with any amount of voltage. Images of people strapped to a bed, writhing in pain, circled by men in lab coats, are a far cry from the reality of modern medicine, and in the case of ECT, undermines its huge successes in treating patients with severe, medication-resistant mental illnesses.
Despite often being confused with this treatment, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) stimulates the brain almost undetectably. It has been proven to alleviate depressive symptoms, with and without the oversight of medical professionals. With minimal side effects and promising results regarding efficacy, could tDCS be a legitimate contender for first-line treatment of depression?
