What was your first job as a journalist?

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I have used a typewriter and I own a 1912 L.C. Smith typewriter - a Christmas gift from my dad.

How is social media changing news?

Headlines become tweets which become the only way people are consuming their news. Shorter but not always sweeter.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

"I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world." - Henry R. Luce

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I loved working for my high school paper, the Niles West News. I was a social media editor.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read everything you set your eyes on. Get into the habit of writing every single day.

What's your favorite drink?

A vanilla chai tea latte from Smokey Row Coffee in Des Moines, IA

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Right now, The Lily. A female Washington Post production, the Lily was the first newspaper for women, by women. They brought it back.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

It's the most exciting beat. It is very fast paced but there's also a lot of down time spent waiting on calls, results and verdicts.
