1 Introduction Leaf decomposition is an important ecosystem function in streams (Graça and Canhoto 2006; Vannote et al. 1980). Allochthonous organic matter such as leaves is initially colonised by bacterial and fungal communities, which provide a high-quality food source for macroinvertebrate shredders (Bärlocher 1985; Graça 2001). Because most allochthonous leaf input occurs in autumn decomposition is naturally subject to seasonal changes (Duarte et al. 2016; Nikolcheva and Bärlocher 2005).
