Manga in the 70s acted as a transitional period for the industryーwith an emphasis on the rise in interest for content created by popular female manga authors. Consequently, the shoujo genre rocketed into the mainstream, tackling complex relationships aimed towards a new audience of readers, both young and old. The new readership also allowed the industry to further explore the themes of different sexuality, allowing for broader representation.
