Researchers at the University of Michigan (U-M) have successfully completed a rare 2,300-hour experiment testing a commercial shaft seal under conditions that mimic those of a molten salt reactor (MSR). A custom-built Shaft Seal Test Facility was used to test a circumferential graphite bushing seal. The shaft seal took about 10 days of use to run smoothly and worked best when paired with argon gas.

Korean researchers have developed a “world’s first” spray-based immersion cooling system for lithium-ion battery packs. The team led by Dr. Jinsub Kim at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) says the technique improves thermal safety while addressing the high weight and cost associated with conventional cooling methods. This spray-based immersion cooling technology combines top-down spraying and partial bottom immersion.
