Airbnb is making us rethink what a “direct booking” really means
Airbnb is testing a new “direct booking link” with selected hosts (image below), and it immediately made me question what we even mean by “direct” anymore. Hosts can share the link through their own channels, including social media, email and their websites. If someone uses it to make a reservation, the booking still happens on Airbnb, but the host pays a reduced service fee.

Programming Who? | A Hotel Life | Bashar Wali | 21 comments
Most lifestyle hotels confuse personality with noise. I went to Mews Unfold in Amsterdam ready to defend programming. Culture. Community. Social gravity. The whole sermon. Then Halima Aziz of Zedwell Hotels handed me a smaller knife and made a sharper point. Gateway cities do not need hotels to manufacture culture. The city already does the work. London needs no lobby tarot night. Paris needs no branded local ritual. New York needs no DJ in a vest spinning vinyl beside a fern. I disagreed.
New Edition of The Hotel Guide Explores Emerging Trends in Luxury Hospitality
New Edition of The Hotel Guide Explores Emerging Trends in Luxury Hospitality This title was summarized by AI from the post below. A NEW EDITION of The Hotel Guide is now live. But more importantly—it reflects a shift I’m seeing across the global hospitality landscape: Luxury has never looked better. But it has rarely felt more similar.

83% of travelers now say trust — not price — defines value when booking a hotel, according to a recent Choice Hotels survey. At first glance, that reads as a loyalty or brand affinity headline. But, in practice, I think it reflects a deeper shift in how travel decisions are being made. For much of the past two decades, the decision flow was relatively stable.

For the last fifteen years, the smartest money chased software, but I think we're about to see smart money shift to hospitality. Here's why: As AI flattens digital differentiation and tech becomes increasingly commoditized, something more defensible is regaining appeal: Experience. Which is why Accor’s expansion of Orient Express which they announced this week is more significant than it looks. This isn’t just a hotel brand play.

A letter from a hotel to its guests
This isn’t advice. This isn’t a framework. This is a letter that no hotel would ever be brave enough to publish but every good hotel would quietly agree with. Read this as a guest. Read this as an owner. Read this as someone who actually cares about hospitality and not just the optics around it. Dear Guest, We love welcoming you. Truly. We love the energy you bring when you arrive excited, curious and open to the experience. But there are things we’re tired of pretending don’t exist.

Hospitality keeps talking about growth like it’s a mystery. It isn’t. Growth comes from systems. And nobody proved that louder than Conrad Hilton. Most people think Hilton won because he had hotels. Wrong. He won because he built a machine. He walked into a small Texas town in 1919 to buy a bank. The deal fell apart. He bought a hotel instead. Total accident. But what he did next wasn’t an accident at all.

If I started a school of hospitality today, I wouldn’t teach one thing that a robot can memorize or an algorithm can automate. I wouldn’t waste a second on surface level skills that sound good in a classroom but collapse the moment a real guest walks in. I’d build a school that teaches the truth. Hospitality today is emotional, psychological, cultural, and fast.

SHARE THIS PAGE NEWSLETTERS CONTACT US SUBMIT CONTENT ADVERTISING Are Hotels Making Themselves Irrelevant? By Scott Eddy Tuesday, 28th October 2025 If I was made your Director of Sales and Marketing tomorrow, I wouldn’t start with a logo, a tagline, or a new campaign. I’d start by tearing down the weak foundation you’ve been standing on for years. Most hotels are not failing because of bad service. They’re failing because they’re invisible, irrelevant, and too slow to adapt.

'Expensive' is Relative. : 4Hoteliers
Letting staff turnover spin out of control because you treat employees like they’re disposable? Extremely expensive. Cutting corners on guest experience and hoping no one notices? The most expensive mistake of all. This industry is full of leaders who brag about saving money upfront, then act shocked when the hidden bill shows up later. Bad reviews, empty rooms, wasted ad spend, burned-out teams. The cheap option always ends up costing more. I’ve seen it everywhere.

Hospitality needs to stop disrespecting marketing. (I can already feel the eye-rolls coming from the hospitality leaders 🙄) Too many hotels treat marketing like an afterthought, like one person can be an entire department. That mindset is broken and it’s costing properties real money. In hospitality you would never expect your chef to also run the front desk, manage housekeeping, oversee banquets, handle the spa, pour the wine, and audit the books.
Every Conversation Around the Hospitality Talent Gap Starts in the Wrong Place : 4Hoteliers
The truth is not that people do not want to work. The truth is that people do not want to work for you. They do not want to sacrifice their mental health for your broken schedules. They do not want to live paycheck to paycheck while being told to “smile through the pain.” They do not want to spend their best years giving everything to companies that give nothing back. This is not entitlement. This is evolution. We live in a time where options exist.

What Bangkok street vendors can teach the hospitality industry
Bangkok street vendors exemplify true hospitality through instinctive service, efficiency, and warmth—offering invaluable lessons to the hospitality industry on guest recognition, inclusivity, and human connection beyond luxury standards. If you want to understand the purest form of hospitality, you will not find it in a luxury resort or a five-star restaurant.

After 10 years in investment banking, I moved overseas and lived in Europe and Asia for 17 years. While living in Bangkok, I started the first digital agency in Asia, we were the 'go-to' agency when the region was really establishing itself as a destination, and it remained the biggest one in the region for 5 years. Now I travel full-time while teaching brands how to turn storytelling into ROI for the hospitality industry.
