Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I've been writing on issues where law & policy intersect for well over a decade. Richard Ackland published some of my first writing.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, to learn how to type at high school.

How is social media changing news?

The pace is faster than ever before. Stories on policy too often miss out over stories on personalities and "optics".

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Understanding power dynamics.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via Twitter DM or email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft office, search engines & twitter.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Our high school did not have a newspaper.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My pieces for Eureka Street as they got writing about technology, law & policy to an audience beyond the usual suspects.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading a book on my new swivel chair.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

In Australia, The Monthly.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That technology is all about gadgets and isn't relevant to all of us. I'd like people to understand that digital rights are human rights.
