What was your first job as a journalist?
I contributed to my high school newspaper. Later freelanced for a music magazine.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I learned to type on a typewriter in 9th grade.
How is social media changing news?
Social media makes all news immediate, readily available and brief. It needs to be embraced and used responsibly.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Most recently Zoe Barnes from House of Cards. I love the politics and her ability to follow stories. She's smart and intuitive - sharp.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Commitment to seeking the truth and presenting the facts that are discovered in a fair and balanced way to an audience.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
google docs, Word, Excel, InDesign, Wordpress, iPhone, Nikon D40
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter. I'm obsessed with it. I like the real time conversation and ability to share quickly. Also love the challenge of the restrictions.
Who do you wish followed you?
US Department of Ed, NY Times, Rolling Stone, anyone who is genuinely interested in changing the world
Why did you become a journalist?
I love to write and I want to change the world. Sounds cliche, but it's the truth.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes. I was a feature/opinions writer. I also was a photographer.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
There are many. Most of the columns I write now, help teachers and I love to be able to do that.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be tenacious and diligent. Find creative angles and always remember your audience.
