ShyBelligerent is hurting. You can see it in his videos, where he paces helplessly through cemeteries and city streets and unfurnished bedrooms. You can hear and feel it in his voice. The 30-year-old rapper born Michael William, who is rail-thin with sharp, angular features and a pencil mustache, is also fearless on the page. He writes about all that’s been done to him, and all that he’s had to do.

For nearly his entire adult life, Matt Skiba has sung and played guitar in Alkaline Trio, a pop-punk outfit that is splendidly competent but reasonably polarizing — and not just in its native Chicago. Along the way, he also filled in for Tom DeLonge of Blink-182, those mall rock he-devils so mistrusted by punk purists. Alkaline’s style — heavily EQ’ed vocals, chugga-chugga power chords — isn’t for everyone, not even close.

What’s in a name? Porno for Pyros is a hell of a moniker, one of the most risque in rock ‘n’ roll. Any self-diagnosed “pyro” must be a freak show on wheels, right? A nihilist? Nothing could be further from the truth, at least insofar as it pertains to this band. Porno for Pyros’s founding frontman is Perry Farrell, a bringer of glad tidings, an extinguisher of fires — and a committed peacenik. This isn’t his first rodeo.
