Fixing the EV error: Straight six Dodge Charger saves the muscle car
With most forbidden fruit in the car industry, it's forbidden for good reason. Given the quality of some of the cars from China that have made it to the UK, just imagine the bitter taste of what hasn't been offered for export yet. Things get more interesting in Japan, admittedly, but culturally the likes of kei cars will never be more than a curiosity and have the novelty value of a fruit machine.
In an era of annoying bongs, my Tesla Model Y does ADAS right
Moving cars around the car park at Autocar HQ on a weekday morning can be a stressful start to the day at the best of times. Unfamiliar cars in tight spaces between concrete pillars before your morning coffee has kicked in is tough enough; throw in the beeps and bongs many modern cars make and you've got a sensory challenge to overcome on top.
ZEV mandate consultation launched: review could soften electric car sales targets
The government has officially launched a review that will consider whether to soften the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate targets for electric car sales from 2027-2035. It will look to consult with car makers, wider industry and other stakeholders to reduce the proportion of EV sales that car makers need to make between 2027 and 2035, at which point all new vehicles must be zero-emissions under the current plan.
Jaguar's next-gen interior stays true to 'copy nothing' promise
The arrival of the new Jaguar Type 01 interior pictures created one of those ‘everyone around the laptop’ moments in the office to have a look when they landed. The reaction as we opened the files for the first time? Muted appreciation. No dropped jaws. Lots of ‘ahhh yeahs’ and ‘oooookays’.
Porsche's GT boss: why future 911 GT3s will keep getting better
There's a sell-out crowd at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone, host of the Sunstede Festival celebrating 75 years of Porsche in the UK. To the attendees, as the brand's biggest enthusiasts, Andreas Preuninger is a rock star akin to a Glastonbury headliner given the number of hits he has overseen as head of Porsche's GT division.
ZEV mandate review imminent: government mulls softer sales targets
The government is set to launch a review that will look to soften the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) targets for electric car sales from 2027-2035. The review is set to last six weeks and will launch imminently. It will look to consult with car makers, wider industry and other stakeholders to reduce the proportion of electric car sales car makers need to make between 2027 and 2035, where the current plan is for all new vehicle sales to be zero emissions.
Who is China really stealing sales from?
On the face of it, the UK new car market is a land of milk and honey again for car makers selling here, with sales up nearly 10% year on year. Given that increase, you'd expect to see general growth across the board – or at least no worse than standing still – but the volume of new entrants from China means there are a significant amount of losers.
Exclusive: China's Stratos UK-bound as £50,000 EV sports car
China's first 'mid-engined' sports car will reach the UK in April 2027 under the billing of "the car Lotus should have built". The SC-01 is built on a dedicated spaceframe chassis with the battery mounted behind the two seats and an electric motor on each axle. Already on sale in China (where it's part of EV maker JMEV's line-up and named the Yichi 01) and some other global markets, including Italy, it will now be made in right-hand drive, with prices starting from around £50,000.
Tesla toilets and pet protectors: my Model Y experience is just easy
Tesla has a knack of staying ahead of the EV competition. Initially, simply being the first mass-market electric car brand gave it the lead in the EV world. Then came the proprietary Tesla Supercharger network, offering cheaper, easier and more reliable charging than third-party providers without the faff of having to download a new app every time or even tap a credit card.

Kia EV4 GT review: low and fast, but a genuine electric hot-hatch?
Close We have had small electric hot hatchbacks such as the Alpine A290 and large ones like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N but, as yet, not a lot in the real heartland of Volkswagen Golf GTI-sized machinery. To be fair, the lack of traditional family-sized electric hot hatches has been due to a near total absence of donor cars. Almost all five-door, five-seat, circa 4.3m-long EVs have been homogenised crossovers, in part because of the need to accommodate the depth of a battery pack.
Is Genesis a success? It depends how you judge a premium brand
What defines success for a car company? Sales, profits, happy dealers, happy customers, brand awareness: these are all attributes that go into what we would consider a healthy automotive business. All of which makes judging the success of Genesis quite difficult.
Genesis mulls small premium EV as it expands line-up
Genesis is open to launching smaller electric cars in the future as it continues to expand its range. For now, its smallest is the 4.5m-long GV60 crossover, which leaves plenty of room below it. It has experimented with a smaller model in the past with the Mint concept in 2019. Now it's investigating future segments that it could enter in order to expand its customer base, said Genesis Europe MD Peter Kronschnabl.
Genesis GV90 eyes Range Rover with cinema screen, coach doors
Genesis's upcoming Range Rover rival will have Rolls-Royce-style coach doors as it makes a statement about the brand's luxury intentions. The GV90 is just weeks away from launch and will become the flagship for the Hyundai sibling brand on the premium side of its model range. It will arrive at a similar time to the GV60 Magma, the first in a series of high-performance models that will perform a similar role on the sporting side.
Genesis Box Buggy is a quad-motor luxury EV for the golf course
Genesis has reinvented the humble golf buggy as a quad-motor, open-sided and luxuriously appointed off-road cruiser. Making its UK debut at the Genesis Scottish Open golf tournament over the weekend, the Box Buggy is the work of Genesis design chief Luc Donckerwolke and a small team of the Korean brand's designers. It was first shown at the Le Mans 24 Hours last month, where it was used as a pit-lane shuttle for the Genesis Magma hypercar racing team.
MG plug-in hybrids will switch to semi-solid-state batteries in 2027
MG will equip its next-generation plug-in hybrids with semi-solid-state battery technology from 2027. The new technology, announced earlier this year, will come first to the MG 4 EV Urban hatchback, and it has now been confirmed that it will then be used in PHEVs - first the next-generation MG ZS in 2027, then the MG HS and MG S9.
MG Cyber: plush SUV concept shows brand’s future style
The bold new MG Cyber concept serves as a showcase for the Chinese company’s future design direction and will evolve into its flagship EV. A Goodwood Festival of Speed star, the Cyber is electric and close to five metres in length - and described by MG design boss Jozef Kaban as a "dream car" for the brand. The Cyber will perform a similar role on the premium and aspirational side as the MG Cyberster roadster has done on the sporting side for MG.
MG Go hot hatch previews Renault 5 rival for 2027
The new MG Go concept car is the first preview of the new MG 2 supermini, which will arrive in 2027 as a rival to the likes of the Renault 5 and Mini Cooper. It has been unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside another MG concept, a plush SUV called the MG Cyber. The production version of the Go will be positioned as a fun, fashionable model rather than a budget offering and marks the latest entry into a new segment by the Chinese brand, as its growth and expansion continues.
Renault Group chief: European car industry 'are not losers'
Renault Group boss François Provost says it's his mission to show that the European car industry "are not losers". The very survival of the European industry is under threat from Chinese brands undercutting its cars on the market and undermining its supply chains and manufacturing bases.
Alpine "will stay in F1" as Gucci deal bolsters brand awareness
The Renault Group is committed to Formula 1 and plans to keep majority control of its team. The Enstone-based operation has been through several iterations in recent years, transitioning from a full Renault works entry to an Alpine team with power units bought in from Mercedes. Next year, the team will be renamed again after a title sponsorship and investment from the Italian luxury goods brand Gucci.
Renault would consider UK car production with bigger market share
Renault has left the door open to manufacturing in the UK in the future - but several hurdles stand in the way before that can be realised. Speaking at a wide-ranging monthly media briefing, Renault Group CEO François Provost also called on European regulators to freeze all regulations for the next 10 years in order to bring new car prices under control and stop European products becoming unaffordable for buyers.
Porsche Sunstede Festival: celebrating 75 years of Porsche UK
“This beautifully streamlined rear-engined sports model is the first German car to be shown in England since the war.” That car, announcing its maker’s arrival on these shores, was the Porsche 356 at the Earl’s Court motor show in October 1951 and those words were tucked away on page 141 of The Autocar’s 19 October 1951 issue.
"Hey Grok, find a charger and tell me the Plymouth score": Tesla AI bot changes driving for good
When did a truly innovative new feature last appear on a car? Not just a passing trend but a breakthrough against which the tide would never turn. Automatic gearboxes, seatbelts, ESC: you get the idea. Touchscreens definitely don’t qualify… You’d think the introduction of such features would be a regular occurrence in the electric era, yet however new and fast-improving EV technology may be, it is at its core a propulsion method.
Ford Explorer
Richard Lane, Mark Tisshaw INTRODUCTION DESIGN & STYLING A clean-sheet design for the car that effectively replaces the Focus (a habitual five-star entity in these pages) would have been nice, but for reasons we have touched on, that hasn't happened. Ford spent $2 billion converting the old Fiesta assembly line for Explorer production, and it's here that the panels are pressed and spot-welded and the car's steel monocoque is then married to the MEB.
More Golf R than GTI: Kia EV4 GT hot hatch driven
Mark Tisshaw We have had small electric hot hatchbacks like the Alpine A290 and large ones like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N but as yet nothing in the real heartland of Volkswagen Golf GTI -sized machinery. Cue the phrase: until now. To be fair, the lack of traditional family-sized electric hot hatches has been due to a near total absence of donor cars.

Polestar 2 review: getting old but unlike most EVs it's getting better with age | Autocar
Close Range at a glance Polestar's is a simple derivative line-up in which you choose between Standard Range and Long Range models, the latter also being available in four-wheel-drive Dual Motor form. On all models, both Pilot and Plus packages are offered, the former adding assisted driving technology, the latter more various items of optional equipment.
5000 Miles with a £90k Polestar 3 - the good, the bad, and the 'sodding key' that kept breaking | Autocar Original
We've long been promised cars of quite different shapes and sizes thanks to the advent of EVs and the skateboard-style architectures on which they're based. But instead we seem to have been treated to a series of slightly taller and visually uninspiring hatchbacks. The Polestar 3, though, really is something different. In its profile and proportions, I'm struggling to pick a direct rival or even say what it reminds me of.
Opinion: Volvo has got the band back together | Autocar
Volvo was one of the biggest industry success stories of the 2010s, doing what no other car maker has done in the modern era by breaking out of the mainstream and becoming a true premium player. The cars, designed by Thomas Ingenlath, looked great and the business performed even better, setting sales records six years in a row under CEO Håkan Samuelsson, to whom we awarded our top Issigonis Trophy at the 2020 Autocar Awards.

It received a total of 320 points, beating the Skoda Elroq into second place with 220 points.
The McLaren Artura put its troubled past behind it in 2025 – now it's a true Ferrari hunter | Autocar
At the beginning of my first full lap of Llandow Circuit behind the wheel of the Artura in the summer, I had what can at best be called a 'track limits violation', cutting the corner onto the grass at the first chicane. It felt awful and sounded loud from behind the wheel but looked far less dramatic on camera. And, thankfully, there wasn't a scratch on the car.

Renault CEO 'pushing' to get four-wheel-drive 4 on sale

Renault is preparing its retro off-roader for production – we've driven it early | Autocar Original
Renault is close to signing off a four-wheel-drive version of the 4 for production, having engineered a working prototype of the 4 Savane 4x4 concept car. Indeed, Autocar has driven the concept on a beach in Denmark and can report the model already feels fresh from the factory and ready for a place in Renault showrooms. Few details of the prototype have been revealed since it was first seen at the French Open tennis tournament in Paris in the spring.
JLR hasn't launched a car in three years. Here's why its new CEO needs to break the cycle | Autocar Original
In June 2021, Thierry Bolloré gave his only sit-down interview with Autocar in the middle of a two-year stint as JLR’s CEO. Bolloré started the modern evolution at JLR and outlined his desire for the firm to focus less on the scale it craved in the 2010s and more on becoming a financially sound business built on creating more profitable models, the star among them a reborn Jaguar. Four years on, where are those models?
Why I think the government will regret its proposed EV road tax | Autocar
The biggest loser from the UK government's expected introduction of ‘pay-per-mile’ road pricing as a way of taxing electric vehicles will ultimately be the government itself. While in the short term it is very much car makers that need a rapid acceleration in EV sales (as they are on the hook for fines for missing sales targets set out in the government’s ZEV mandate), in the long term it is the government that will face legal action if it fails in its pledge for the UK to be net-zero by 2050.
Why Chinese brands are in a "race to the finish line" for survival | Autocar Original
A Geely official once told me that the reason Chinese car groups launch so many brands is because of the lack of brand loyalty among local consumers. We’re still in an expansionist era but it will calm down eventually – and therefore “there’s a race to be in the group that makes it to the finishing line”, they said. Geely itself is the latest Chinese brand to launch in the UK, starting with its EX5.

Is this a classic hatchback for the electric age; or something a touch too progressive for its own good? | Autocar
Close Verdict Model tested: Rating: 7 Kia’s new hatchback EV looks strange, but plays it sensible. Range, space, drivability and comfort all impress; for hatchback-typical driver appeal, look elsewhere.
