In 2015, singer-songwriter Hayley Kiyoko released the song “Girls Like Girls.” Now, after 11 years, the song has gone through several transformations: first into a viral music video, then a novel adaptation penned by Kiyoko herself, and now her debut feature film. Girls Like Girls is a warm, melancholy, sapphic coming-of-age story that doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking for the genre, but serves as a lovely debut worth seeking out.

“Obsession” Subverts the Tóxica Trope

About midway through Curry Barker’s runaway hit, Obsession, Nikki (Inde Navarrette) is watching her friend Bear (Michael Johnson) sleep. She’s under the influence of his love-spell-gone-awry wish. Through two pinpricks of light, like cat’s eyes, peeking out from the dark, we can see the hunger, the pain, and the confusion of her situation ripple through Nikki’s expressions. She oscillates between love and fear, her dreams haunting her.

look, i've been an emerald fennell skeptic, but something about this worked on me! the unabashed sexuality and sensuality might be shallow, and fennell is shameless (once again) in her quest to provoke. but this time the sheer, feral joy fennell brings to the film's images and textures is contagious. thankfully, the provocations here feel more like delicious invitations than childish rebellion.
