Abstract India’s food consumption landscape has transformed over the past decade, with implications for nutrition security. This article quantifies changes in household expenditure, consumption patterns across major food groups, and dietary sources of selected micronutrients. Data from nationally representative Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys (HCES) 2011–12 and 2023–24 were analysed.

Most poverty estimates based on household consumption surveys assume equal distribution of resources among household members. The paper relaxed this assumption by using household expenditure data on privately assignable items—specifically, clothing—to estimate resources allocated to children (0–14 years), adult females, and adult males (15–79 years). We then compute group-specific poverty rates and poverty gaps for each demographic, capturing intra-household disparities.
