I’m Marisa Wikramanayake. I am a freelance journalist and editor (also known as a word wrangler). I started my journalism career as a weekly columnist for the Sunday Leader writing on politics and popular culture for four years for a readership of 100,000. Since then I have written for Science Network WA, RTR FM, The New Daily, The Daily FT, Audrey Daybook and Books & Publishing on politics, business, science, technology, the environment, music, games and books.

In my spare time I write novels …

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a weekly columnist for a national Sri Lankan paper for 4 years covering politics, popular culture & life in Australia.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No but I wish I had one.

How is social media changing news?

It's a great tool to disseminate important information in a crisis & it's a great means of debunking false information when news is spread.

KSP - Varuna Foundation Fellowship

2018 - Creative writing

I won the inaugural KSP - Varuna Foundation Fellowship which gave me a chance to spend a week at each writing centre to work on a crime fiction novel.
