The Auburn Plainsman — An Opelika City Schools faculty member has been arrested on a charge of soliciting a sex act with a student under the age of 19, which is a Class A misdemeanor. Detectives from the Opelika Police Department arrested Montre Learius Battle, 37, on Feb. 16, according to a press release from the OPD.

The Auburn Plainsman — UPDATE: On Nov. 7, detectives from APD arrested Tyondre Antravius Dowdel, 28, on a felony warrant charging him with domestic violence first degree. The condition of the victim remains serious but stable. Dowdell is currently in the Lee County Jail on no bond, pending judicial review.

The Auburn Plainsman — This afternoon in front of Auburn's academic classroom and laboratory complex, the National Pan-Hellenic Council held a seminal reveal of the Legacy Plaza, which is dedicated to the historically Black greek life organization's presence on campus. The Legacy Plaza erected nine markers recognizing the four sororities and five fraternities that make up the NPHC.

The Auburn Plainsman — On Sept. 15 1963, the 16th street Baptist Church bombing took the life of 11-year-old Denise McNair along with three other young girls and left nearly 15 injured. Nearly a year later, Denise's sister, Lisa was born.

The Auburn Plainsman — This fall, the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center will house two new facilities that will serve the Auburn community while also acting as a teaching center for students enrolled in the university's hospitality program.

Richard Hansen, dean of Auburn University's Harrison School of Pharmacy, was found responsible for a violation of Auburn's Policy Against Discrimination and Harassment after sexually harassing a student at an off-campus bar last spring, according to documents received by The Plainsman.

The Auburn Plainsman — In June 2021, Auburn University President Jay Gogue announced that he was looking to retire from his current position after serving his second term as president. The University has announced Chris Roberts as the single candidate in the running to take over Gogue's place. If elected, Roberts will serve as Auburn University's 21st president.

The Auburn Plainsman — For the second time in a week, East Alabama Health reported a new all-time high in COVID-19 hospitalizations as of Jan. 18 with 100 patients. This rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations follows a previous high of 96 on Sunday, which surpassed the previous all-time high of 93 on Sept. 4, 2021.

The Auburn Plainsman — The Lee County Historical Society held its annual Pioneer day at Pioneer Park in Loachapoka on Saturday. Pioneer Day has been a staple in the community for decades with many long term traditions and vendors. Amy Young, vendor at Pioneer Day, sells leather belts and other crafts.

The Auburn Plainsman — With a semester that will be fully in person for the first time in over a year, sophomores are facing many new experiences they missed out on during their freshman year. Lily Kucik, sophomore in pre-med, was raised in Opelika and is entering a fall semester with on-campus classes for the first time.

The Auburn Plainsman — Ross House Coffee and Roastery, housed in the historic building on Ross Street, will open up a second location on July 22. The new location will be located in the lobby of the 320 West Mag apartment complex near Chick-fil-A. Toni Holt, owner of Ross House, said that she never originally planned on opening a second location.

The Auburn Plainsman — Lila Quintero Weaver is a graphic novelist and author born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She moved to Marion, Alabama at the age of 5. Artwork from her graphic novel "Darkroom: Memoirs in Black in White" will be on display at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts through March 30.
