. Feb. 2026. 256p. ISBN 9780062564177. $32.99. RELIGION COPY ISBN In this provocative new work, New Testament scholar and theologian Wright (Oxford Univ.; The Challenge of Acts) contests the dominant Christian understanding that the goal of the religion’s faithful is to go to heaven.
The Uncomfortable Truth of Easter
From the editor: At the 2008 National Pastors Conference in San Diego, Preaching Today got to interview N. T. Wright about his book Surprised by Hope and how it relates to preaching. To read that interview, click here. We asked Bishop Wright what he would be preaching on Easter Sunday. At the time, he was still working out the details.
An Extended Review of Jesus and the Powers: Christian Political Witness in an Age of Totalitarian Terror and Dysfunctional Democracies
Jesus and the Powers: Christian Political Witness in an Age of Totalitarian Terror and Dysfunctional Democracies Published by . Zondervan Academic in 208pp / $22.99 / ISBN: 9780310162247 Harold Laswell famously defined politics as “who gets what, when, and how.” These decisions are surely as fraught now as they were when Aristotle wrote about politics in ancient Athens. Politics has always been about power: who has the power to determine who gets what, when, and how?

The New Testament in Its World Video Lectures
A great companion to the book. I found the lectures to be approachable enough for well-studied lay people, but also a nice refresher for seminarians like myself. A great resource. The video on Revelation is currently broken and cannot be played past the 5:10 mark on any platform (web, PC, mac, mobile). Tech support confirms that this is on their end. Since the content cannot be fully used, my review reflects this.
The Best Books I Read in 2023
Christians are known as “people of the book” because of their commitment to the Bible. One of the first things missionaries did when they reached a new culture was teach people to read. While reading the Bible is our priority, anyone who has read it knows that the biblical writers read things other than the Scriptures. They read the literature of their time.
Remaking the World
How 7 Transformational Events in 1776 Paved the Way for Today’s Post-Christian West With dizzying social transformations in everything from gender to social justice, it may seem like there’s never been a more tumultuous period in history. But a single year in the late 18th century saw a number of influential transformations—or even revolutions—that changed the social trajectory of the Western world.

Breaking Ground
About The Book A public health and economic crisis provoked by Covid-19. A social crisis cracked open by the filmed murder of George Floyd. A leadership crisis laid bare as the gravity of a global pandemic met a country suffocating in political polarization and idolatry. In the spring of 2020, Comment magazine created a publishing project to tap the resources of a Christian humanist tradition to respond collaboratively and imaginatively to these crises. Plough soon joined in the venture.
Simply Lewis by N. T. Wright
Feature Reflections on a Master Apologist After 60 Years by N. T. Wright I once found myself working closely, in a cathedral fundraising campaign, with a local millionaire. He was a self-made man. When I met him he was in his 60s, at the top of his game as a businessman, and was chairing our Board of Trustees. To me, coming from the academic world, he was a nightmare to work with.
Our Father
This article is an excerpt from Following the Call: Living the Sermon on the Mount Together. Our Father in heaven … (Matthew 6:9) Cyprian of Carthage And so, dear friends, since we call God our Father, let us remember to act like children of God, so that he may find pleasure in having us as his children, just as we do in having him as our Father. N. T. Wright The word “Father” concentrates our attention on the doubly revolutionary message and mission of Jesus.
The New Testament in Its World
The New Testament in Its World: An Introduction to the History, Literature, and Theology of the First Christians is a nearly 1,000-page introductory study of the New Testament in its context. The book grew from Michael Bird’s proposal to distill N.T. Wright’s massive Christian Origins and the Question of God series into one volume.
The Book of Waking Up: Experienceing the Divine Love That Reorders a Life
Seth has lived these words, fought for them, wrestled lies to the ground, and found love on the other side. May we slow down, pay attention, and wake up to the freedom we've been craving all along. -- Rebekah Lyons, bestselling author, Rhythms of Renewal and You Are Free The Book of Waking Up truly is for all of us. In these pages you will not find the dreaded alarm clock, no. This is a glorious song of joy, of honesty, and of wonder-working power.
Jesus Is Coming - Plant a Tree!
We have declared, in the Nicene Creed, that Jesus Christ “will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom shall have no end,” but neither mainline Catholic nor mainline Protestant theology has explored what exactly we mean by all that, and we have left a vacuum to be filled by various kinds of dualism.
A Church Called Tov
What is the way forward for the church? Tragically, in recent years, Christians have gotten used to revelations of abuses of many kinds in our most respected churches - from Willow Creek to Harvest, from Southern Baptist pastors to Sovereign Grace churches. Respected author and theologian Scot McKnight and former Willow Creek member Laura Barringer wrote this book to paint a pathway forward for the church. We need a better way.

N. T. Wright: The Pandemic Should Make Us Humble-and Relentlessly Practical
Between around-the-clock news reports, interviews with public health experts, and pundits hashing out the pros and cons of different disease-fighting strategies, we’re hardly at a loss for information and perspectives on COVID-19. Yet there are still many questions we struggle to answer with complete confidence: Why has this happened? What should we do in response? And where is God in all of this?
Christianity Offers No Answers About the Coronavirus
For many Christians, the coronavirus-induced limitations on life have arrived at the same time as Lent, the traditional season of doing without. But the sharp new regulations—no theater, schools shutting, virtual house arrest for us over-70s—make a mockery of our little Lenten disciplines. Doing without whiskey, or chocolate, is child’s play compared with not seeing friends or grandchildren, or going to the pub, the library or church. There is a reason we normally try to meet in the flesh.
Loving to Know by N. T. Wright
In many spheres, the question not just of what we know but of how we know is urgent and vital. I have tried to develop the notion of love as the ultimate form of knowledge and to explore its wider relevance. My history with this question begins in the 1980s, when I was growing concerned by profound distortions in my discipline of New Testament studies. These distortions could be traced to the philosophy, and especially the epistemology, of the Enlightenment.
Beneath the Tree of Life
As an aid to this reflection, and to the vocations that follow from it, let me close with a truly remarkable example of the sort of thing I mean. In Revelation 22, the river of life flows from the city to irrigate the surrounding countryside, and on its banks grows the tree of life: not a single tree, as in Genesis, but many trees, now freely available, bearing fruit each month and with leaves for healing.
The New Testament Doesn’t Say What Most People Think It Does About Heaven
One of the central stories of the Bible, many people believe, is that there is a heaven and an earth and that human souls have been exiled from heaven and are serving out time here on earth until they can return. Indeed, for most modern Christians, the idea of “going to heaven when you die” is not simply one belief among others, but the one that seems to give a point to it all. But the people who believed in that kind of “heaven” when the New Testament was written were not the early Christians.

A Lent That's Not For Your Spiritual Improvement
Every year more and more evangelicals seem to be observing Lent. We’ve recognized it as a time of profound reorientation. We all are, as the hymn “Come, Thou Fount” aptly puts it, “prone to wander.” We are frail, sinful people who need to often reconsider our priorities, motives, and commitments. And fasting, which has both historical and biblical precedent, is a great way to foster reorientation. In Scripture, we see that fasting is a sign of sorrow over sin (Deut.
Theology of the Future
Stop thinking like children.” Paul’s admonition to the Corinthians is even more urgent for us today. Though they should be like little children when it came to evil, he insisted they should be grown-ups when it came to thinking. To that end, Paul constantly tried to teach people not only what to think but how to think. This remains vital. The various disciplines grouped together as “theology” or “divinity” are uniquely positioned to continue this project.
Theology of the Future
Bible scholars, theologians, and philosophers used to work together. N.T. Wright believes they need to do so again. Stop thinking like children." Paul's admonition to the Corinthians is even more urgent for us today. Though they should be like little children when it came to evil, he insisted they should be grown-ups when it came to thinking. To that end, Paul constantly tried to teach people not only what to think but how to think. This remains vital.
N.T. Wright: What Is This Word?
One of the greatest journalists of the last generation, Bernard Levin, described how, when he was a small boy, a great celebrity came to visit his school. The headmaster, perhaps wanting to impress, called the young Levin to the platform in front of the whole school. The celebrity, perhaps wanting to be kind, asked the little boy what he'd had for breakfast. "Matzobrei," replied Levin.
N.T. Wright On the Renewed Popularity of the Apostle Paul, “One of the Great Intellectual, Cultural, Spiritual Figures of the Whole World”
“Paul: A Biography” isn’t the first book Bible scholar N.T. Wright has written about Paul, the apostle responsible for so many of the letters in the New Testament. There’s also “Paul,” “Paul and the Faithfulness of God,” “Paul and his Recent Interpreters,” “The Paul Debate: Critical Questions for Understanding the Apostle,” “What St. Paul Really Said” and a number of Bible study guides for Paul’s letters, just to name a few.

The roots of Christianity - Feature
The recent death of Reverend Billy Graham and the many diverse responses to it illustrated how inextricably Christianity has woven itself into the fabric of American history. How did this ancient religion grow from a loose group of individuals following an itinerant preacher grow into a massive movement with millions of followers? Three provocative new books examine the evolution of the Christian religion from its roots through to the Middle Ages.
What Is Marriage For?
But when we get to the New Testament, we find something which goes clean against the assumption I mentioned a moment ago. We might expect, from the received assumption, that we would move from a strict moral demand in the Old Testament to a slackening of moral tension in the New. Not a bit of it. Jesus is very clear, in Mark 10 and elsewhere: now that he is there, launching God’s kingdom, renewing the covenant between God and his people, the creation itself is being renewed.

"Churches Are In-Between Places": A Sermon for Trinity Wall Street - OnFaith
The following is from a sermon delivered to Trinity Church Wall Street on the Feast of the Ascension, 2014. We are here together on this springtime evening in obedience to commands both secular and sacred. First, the secular: after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 brought an end to the strife of the English Civil War by placing William and Mary at the head of the British state, King William issued ecclesiastical orders to the royal governor of New York.

Reconsidering the Meaning of Jesus's Crucifixion eBook: N. T. Wright: Amazon.ca: Kindle Store
In this book, N.T. Wright explores (in exhausting detail) what actually happened (spiritually, and theologically) when Jesus was nailed to the cross in the Spring of 33 CE. Wright observes that nobody on the Saturday after Good Friday was persuaded by the humiliating death of Jesus from Nazareth that a world-wide revolution had just been launched. And yet within less than 30 years, biblical writers and other contemporaries were writing about this event like it had cosmic significance. Why is that?

The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory: Why a Baby Threatened the King of Kings
Luke's nativity is no pastoral idyll, with rustic shepherds paying homage to the infant King. Rather, it presents competing kingdoms which offer radically different definitions of peace, power, glory. Credit: David Silverman / Getty Images By the time Jesus was born, Augustus had already been monarch for a quarter century. King of kings, he ruled from Gibraltar to Jerusalem and from Britain to the Black Sea.
The Kingdom and the Power: What the Resurrection Means, Then and Now
There are compelling reasons why Christianity is historically incomprehensible without the resurrection. But the question of whether it happened mustn't distract from the question of what it means. Credit: Jurand / Shutterstock I have argued at considerable length that we cannot understand the historical rise of the early Christian movement unless we take as basic their belief that Jesus was bodily raised from the dead, leaving an empty tomb behind him.
The King Jesus Gospel
The Gospel is About Jesus In my desire to expand my knowledge (and keep myself entertained), I read a lot of books. In my head, I know that many times I need to ruminate on a book more to really get the point and put into practice what I have heard from it. But too often I just keep reading. After all I have a blog to write. So I made a goal for myself to re-read one book a month. I suck at meeting goals. I have only re-read 10 in the last 18 months and only 2 this year.
