Israel-Palestine war: How Meta is once again failing Palestinians
As a Palestinian, Meta has failed me once again. In yet another example of dehumanisation, a WhatsApp feature that allows users to search AI-generated images reveals blatantly racist portrayals of Palestinians. A recent Guardian report showed that a search for “Muslim boy Palestinian” generated a cartoon of a boy wielding a gun, while “Israeli boy” showed smiling children at play. This is only the latest iteration of problematic trends within Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company.
Netanyahu's regime is coming for Palestinian digital rights
Benjamin Netanyahu's new extremist far-right government in Israel is planning a wave of legislation that could further suppress the freedom of all Palestinians. Their aim needs to be clearly understood. Netanyahu's government wants to suppress Palestinians' right to express their beliefs and opinions, to organise against an increasingly authoritarian government, and to document and expose its violations of human rights.

Israel’s Facebook Bill: An attack on Palestinian free speech
Israel’s Facebook Bill: An attack on Palestinian free speech States of Journalism: Nadim Nashif explains how the draconian Facebook Bill, which will give the Israeli government the power to censor content on all websites, will further infringe on the rights of Palestinians to critique Israel’s crimes. Late last year, the Israeli Ministerial Committee for Legislation unanimously approved the controversial Incitement on Social Media Bill.
How Israel turned Palestine into a surveillance tech dystopia
Whether in the occupied West Bank, Gaza or Israel, Palestinians live under a cloud of constant Israeli surveillance. Recent revelations have included the Israeli army’s deployment of Blue Wolf facial recognition technology, which reportedly saw Israeli soldiers incentivised with prizes for taking the most photos of Palestinian civilians, and the installation of NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware on the phones of Palestinian human rights workers.
Meta and human rights in Palestine
It was only after Meta’s Oversight Board recommended an independent review, however, that the company responded. Meta put together a Human Rights team and adopted a Human Rights Policy. It showed a willingness to engage with human rights defenders. Last July, the firm published its first annual human rights report. Those actions could have been a positive step, but ended up being a missed opportunity, amounting to minor progress at best.

Why is Palestine Denied Clean Water?
04 Jun 8:49 AM Ramzy Baroud, author of ‘The Last Earth’ and editor of the Palestine Chronicle, wrote a commentary posing the question “if access to clean water is a human right, why is Palestine the exception?” Baroud cites the 2010 UN General Assembly resolution, 64/292 recognizing “the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of life and all human rights.” Baroud proclaims that “it all makes perfect sense.

Surveillance of Palestinians and the Fight for Digital Rights
Overview Surveillance of Palestinians has always been an integral part of Israel’s colonial project. Before the creation of the state of Israel, squads from the Zionist paramilitary group the Haganah roamed Palestinian villages and cities, gathering information on Palestinian residents. Such surveillance over Palestinian lives continued after Israel’s 1967 occupation of the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Free Basics: Facebook’s failure at ‘digital equality’
In Africa, internet costs are out of reach for most, thus having the internet at a low cost or partially free to access basic vital information is important. Free Basics – a mobile app created by Facebook – has since its 2015 launch been hailed by the Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as the “first step towards digital equality” due to its audacious plan to “introduce” millions of people to the internet, many of whom live in developing countries such as Kenya and Ghana.

Israel still portrays itself as a Jewish and democratic state. Yet in practice, as its Palestinian citizens can attest, it functions as a Jewish ethnocracy, leaving small margins of freedom for its Palestinian citizens that have been steadily shrinking in the past few years.
