Nahla Davies’s Biography

I was born in Concourse, Bronx in 1975, and lived in spitting distance of Yankee Stadium. I was frightened of public school, loved playing baseball with the boys, ran home to watch sci-fi films on Friday nights, and listened to all kinds of music a 90s kid could listen to. Some of my favorite artists include Tupac, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Lenny Kravitz, Jane’s Addiction, TLC, The Notorious B.I.G., Hootie & the Blowfish, The Prodigy, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Prince, and Soundgarden.

At 18, I went to Clarkson University. I truly enjoyed college, because I got to pick my own subjects. Instead of Math that my parents wanted me to study, I took a course which still applied mathematical analysis, but also the principles of computer science in order to design and develop computer software.

Not surprisingly, I received excellent grades, and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Software Engineering in 1997. Outside of college, I worked as a bookstore clerk while studying. That started my long affiliation with the writing industry after all.

During my studies I developed analytical skills and learnt how to deal with complex problems in a more systematic way. I understand the value of formal education and I got one, but I also believe in learning by doing. For that reason, I have been working professionally in software development since 1998.
