A landmark university building and its record-breaking lift are celebrating six decades of use. The 78m (256ft) tall Arts Tower, at the University of Sheffield, was officially opened by HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in June 1966, and is home to one of just a handful of paternoster lifts still working in the UK.

Father and son head to kickboxing championships

Paul Powers (back/centre) already has six world kickboxing champions at his Sheffield club A father and son are among a team of nine kickboxers who will compete in an international competition in Spain. Wayne Bird, 52, and his son Luke, 20, will join fighters of Powers Martial Arts in Sheffield when they head to the ISKA World Championships in Madrid in November. Due to the amateur nature of the competition the team need to raise about £14,000 to pay for their trip.

A British Social Attitudes survey found a third of respondents were disillusioned by degrees, while more than 25,000 people told MPs they were confused by student loan terms and conditions.
