Born and raised in Louisiana, Nancy obtained both her undergraduate and law degrees from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Upon graduation from law school in 1990, she began a two year clerkship as a criminal staff attorney for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Lake Charles. After moving to Houston in 1992, she clerked for the Honorable Michael Schneider in the 157th Judicial District Court in Harris County.
