A plan to turn a historic Somerset pub into housing has been approved on appeal as "shocked" campaigners vow to fight back. The old Britannia Inn in Wells could never serve another pint or pie to locals, after the government's Planning Inspectorate ruled in favour of an appeal by the pub owners. The pub, which has been closed since 2021, is to be turned into five houses despite Somerset Council rejecting the scheme.

Village backlash as Somerset farmer plans new 'holiday destination'

Neighbours fear a new glamping site proposed for a farm near Shepton Mallet could bring unwelcome noise, traffic and antisocial behaviour to their village. A public meeting was held in the village of Cranmore on Tuesday evening to discuss plans to build a new glamping site near the old railway station. The meeting was organised by local people, including many who are objecting to the plans by farmer David Corp of Merryfield Farm.

Flooding meeting in Somerset disrupted by flooding

The storm last week hit Somerset hard, with many homes and businesses flooded as heavy rainfall and thunder and lightning hit during the early evening of Monday, June 22. Many people took to social media to show photographs and video of heavy flooding, flash lightning and loud thunder. Some homes lost electricity. In Wells a special meeting about flooding and climate change had been planned in the town hall at around the same time as the storm on Monday evening, June 22.
