From Attendance Crisis to Chronic Condition? Tracking Post-Pandemic Chronic Absenteeism into 2025

Chronic absenteeism improved by nearly 1 percentage point in 2025 across 43 states and Washington, DC, but that recovery had slowed considerably compared with improvements of well over 2 percentage points in the two previous years. Chronic absenteeism rates are not falling fast enough. About 29 percent of students are in districts on pace to cut 2022 absenteeism in half by 2027, a target 18 states have officially adopted.

Please Excuse My Child: Unexcused Absences in Student Attendance and Achievement

Examining excused and unexcused absences separately can reveal important differences in students’ attendance behavior that are obscured by metrics like chronic absenteeism and absence rates, which treat all absences the same. Using Indiana data, we find that unexcused absences follow distinct patterns from unexcused absences: Unexcused absences rise over the spring, while excused absences do not and rise more before and after weekends.
