Inferring the flow properties of epithelial tissues from their geometry
Amorphous materials exhibit complex material properties with strongly nonlinear behaviors. Below a yield stress they behave as plastic solids, while they start to yield above a critical stress Σc. A key quantity controlling plasticity which is, however, hard to measure is the density P(x) of weak spots, where x is the additional stress required for local plastic failure. In the thermodynamic limit P(x) ∼ xθ is singular at x = 0 in the solid phase below the yield stress Σc.
Sensitivity of the timing of Drosophila pupal wing morphogenesis to external perturbations
Abstract The morphogenesis of the pupal wing of Drosophila melanogaster is a powerful model for understanding the physical mechanisms of tissue morphogenesis. During this process, the wing undergoes a dramatic reshaping where the hinge region contracts and pulls on the blade region, triggering a dynamic pattern of cell elongation changes, cell divisions, and cell neighborhood changes Etournay et al. (2015).
Enhancing PDF readability with Liquid Mode: Mobile-friendly PDFs through AI, ML & UX design
Technology can take something commonplace and, through innovation and experimentation, create a whole new experience. In our on-the-go world, which requires us to access information in multiple ways on multiple devices throughout the day, there are few technologies as popular (or as powerful) as the PDF.
Suzanne Eaton (1959-2019)
Main Text These pictures, taken by lab members throughout the years, represent some of our most cherished memories of Suzanne. Top: (left to right) Suzanne carefully listening to her colleague in the yard of MPI-CBG, Dresden. The lab’s coat of arms that Suzanne drew; it depicts our group research topics. Suzanne had a unique sense of fashion—these boots are one of her particularly chic pieces. Bottom: (left to right) Suzanne presenting at the aforementioned lab retreat.
Differential lateral and basal tension drive folding of Drosophila wing discs through two distinct mechanisms
To analyze the overall three-dimensional shape changes during H/H and H/P fold formation over time, we developed a protocol for live imaging of wing imaginal discs in culture (Methods). Cultured wing imaginal discs sustained cell proliferation for at least 10 h (Supplementary Fig. 1m, Supplementary Movie 1) and formed H/H and H/P folds with no visible difference in shape from the hinge folds of fixed wing imaginal discs (Supplementary Figure 1n–q, Supplementary Movie 1).
