In support of surrogacy: a response to the Pope's call for a universal ban
The Pope has called for a universal ban on surrogacy, condemning it as 'deplorable' and a 'violation of the dignity of the woman and child' (see BioNews 1222). This is not terribly surprising, given the Catholic Church's view on other matters relating to human reproduction, including IVF, abortion and gamete donation, although of course, it is a decision for national law-makers and not religious leaders.
There is so much more still to do for LGBT+ parents
The Government's plans to update the law on fertility screening is good news for some LGBT+ intended parents (see BioNews 1213a and BioNews 1213b). Law Commissions' proposals won't achieve surrogacy modernisation
On 29 March 2023 the Law Commissions of England and Wales and the Scottish Law Commission published their long-awaited recommendations for UK surrogacy law reform (see BioNews 1185). The proposed new pathway to parenthood has caught the headlines, and it is good news for intended parents able to find a surrogate through a UK-based surrogacy organisation.

Recovery from an addiction
Has shame ever led you to unplug almost entirely from your friends and family? This is a common scenario with folks who struggle with the debilitating pain of a personal addiction. Such confinement often worsens the harmful addiction cycle, causing further losses and devastation, commonly referred to as “rock bottom.” It is possible to treat and recover from an addiction, but it starts with reaching out and making new connections with those who support your process of change.

the risks and rise of surrogacy
Despite its challenges, surrogacy is becoming a readily available form of family formation for many who have endured considerable heartache and difficulty in conceiving naturally. Surrogacy has an important role to play within our modern society particularly bearing in mind the overwhelming tide-change in social attitudes, the importance of assisted reproduction, such as IVF, and the introduction of same sex marriage which was legalised back in 2014.
Do proposals to reform UK surrogacy law go far enough?
Do proposals to reform UK surrogacy law go far enough? 19 August 2019 Appeared in BioNews 1011 The Law Commission's provisional proposals for surrogacy law reform seek a delicate balance, but do they go far enough? It would be hard to deny that UK surrogacy law is in need of reform. Written in the 1980s, UK law still reflects a policy to discourage surrogacy, even though modern attitudes and government policy now support surrogacy as a positive family-building option.
Missing Their Story: How A Media Furore Meant We Missed The Bigger Picture On Trans And Non-Binary Rights
When Giuliana Kendal decided to take her case to court, it was a decision she thought about carefully for a long time. “I’m no coward,” she told RightsInfo, “but I thought it might have serious implications.” Going to court can be a nerve-wracking decision for anyone, but for Giuliana it came with an added weight – she is a trans woman, and her case was to be heard at the peak of the furore about the Government’s Gender Recognition Act Consultation.

Single parent surrogacy: The Government must heed Parliament's warning
The Government is in the process of changing the law to allow single parents with a child through surrogacy to apply for a parental order. The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights has now given its response, welcoming the proposed changes in principle but raising 'significant concerns about the Government's drafting approach'. With the clock ticking on this long-overdue law change, the Government now needs to get this sorted quickly.
Surrogacy in the UK
For the 1 in 7 couples struggling with infertility who dream of building a family, surrogacy can offer hope through an alternative route. However, the world of surrogacy can be extremely complicated leaving you with endless unanswered questions.
What The Handmaid's Tale has taught me about surrogacy
As a supporter of surrogacy, I expected the television adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale to be uncomfortable viewing: Margaret Atwood's chilling dystopian novel is well known for being the ultimate warning against surrogacy.
