Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote for a designer toy blog called Tomopop, which is now under new management. I specialized in plush toys.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No, I have not.

How is social media changing news?

Outlets are now competing with influencers who quickly share brief posts about news far faster than it takes for us to write an article.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer to receive story pitches via email.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love to write, and the chance to share my thoughts and words with people is an opportunity that I am forever grateful to have experienced.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did, but my school was so small that it was more of a pamphlet than a newspaper. I wrote reviews of video games and Japanese comic books.

When's the best time to pitch you?

The early afternoon is ideal.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I was once asked to review a toy, let the company edit my draft, and then mail the toy back at my own expense. I politely declined.

What's your favorite drink?

If given the opportunity, I would drink milk tea with boba every day of my life.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

I would probably be at Disneyland.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I would say that it is a tie between the Disney Parks Blog and NintendoSoup.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

The idea that companies pay me to promote their products is common. I am not paid to include items in my coverage.
