Ten Tips for Better Presentations - Part 1
Presentation skills—what are they, and why do we need them? Surely, all we need to do is make a few PowerPoint slides, stand in front of the audience, and they are bound to listen (and learn). These posts are drawn from the wisdom and experiences of Vic Brazil, Simon Carley, Ross Fisher and Natalie May. We originally intended to write a paper in the style of the EMJ “Ten Tip” series to encapsulate our approach to teaching presentations, whether at our institutions or at conferences.
Dragon Quest Builders PC Review
Welcome to the magical realm of Dragon Quest Builders from Square Enix, a game where imagination reigns supreme and every block holds the promise of adventure. A world teeming with possibilities, waiting for your creative touch to breathe life into its barren landscapes. Grab your trusty mallet, don your builder’s hat (Not really but sounded good), and prepare to embark on a deeply personal journey through a realm where the power of creation knows no bounds.
Will social media make or break medical conferences?
The conference ‘hashtag’ has become a regular addition to any advertising poster or programme. Social media technologies take many different forms including internet forums, social blogs, microblogs, wikis, podcasts and videos. Social media is cheap and accessible, and differentiated from ‘traditional’ media in quality, reach, frequency, usability, immediacy and permanence that enable anyone (even private individuals) to publish or access information often with minimal quality assurance.
Opinion/Commentary: Leading from the couch; or, ‘appreciative chickens’
We were made for this! I have seen this spoken on social media a dozen times in the new, self-quarantined world we now occupy, in reference to the sea change in how we teach. As in, “Introverts. Germaphobes. Quilters! We were made for this!” But what about doctors and nurses who heal and comfort? Teachers who ignite their students’ minds across a classroom’s expanse? Collaborators who need one another to fuel their creativity?
Head Vs Heart: Opening the Box. St Emlyn's
Ed- This blog post comes at an interesting and challenging time for us all. It was due to be given at #badEMfest in South Africa this week, but as we all know Covid-19 rather scuppered that plan. We were all hugely upset to see #badEMfest canceled and sincerely hope that it will be back in 2021. The content is arguably even more relevant and important now as many of us face challenging times ahead. There are really important personal and societal lessons to be learned from Natalie.
Tracks: The Train Set Game Review
As a child, like many of you, I had a wooden train set, even today the majority of these sets are available everywhere for little and big children alike. In my day, the amount of extras pieces other than the track and train were limited to maybe a tree, but today you can get anything and everything you want – you can now build entire population centres if you want to.
7 Tips to Help Your Business Win Government Contracts
In the huge world of government contracting for small businesses, the probability of success can be daunting and even intimidating. For me, when I made the decision to leave my corporate career to start the Chaise Management Group (CMG) just five short years ago, I honestly didn't know if I would succeed or fail.
Ethics - St.Emlyn's
One of the most inspiring talks at SMACC Dub was delivered by John Carlisle on the subject of fraud in medical publishing. It was inspiring for many reasons, the topic is of real interest to anyone who thinks that we… Read more

Wait Time: Why Silence Matters in Medical Education
Questions, Questions, Questions Over the last fifteen years I’ve noticed that the more I learn about medicine, the more I realise I really know very little and the more questions I ask. There was a glorious moment about two months into my first year of university when I felt really smart*. I’ve never quite managed to get that feeling back.
