1 INTRODUCTION Abscisic acid (ABA) is a plant hormone that was first identified and characterised in 1963 as a promoter of abscission (Ohkuma et al., 1963). At that time, it was called Abscisin-II, but the name ABA was adopted as it became clear that it was involved in many other plant physiological processes (Addicott et al., 1968). Indeed, it is now known that the regulation of abscission is not one of ABA's major functions.
