Federal court of appeal upholds Bay du Nord approval

The Federal Court of Appeal is upholding the federal government’s decision to approve the Bay du Nord offshore oil project. The ruling comes after years of bouncing around Canada’s courts. Lawyers for Sierra Club Canada, Equiterre and Mi'gmawe'l Tplu'taqnn Incorporated (MTI) challenged then-environment and climate change minister Steven Guilbeault’s 2022 approval of the project. That initial challenge was dismissed by a federal court in June 2023, a decision they then appealed.

Canada’s AI strategy includes no new protections for water or climate

The federal government’s long-awaited AI strategy does not tackle the environmental and climate impacts of rapidly building AI infrastructure like data centres. The strategy proposes a significant build-out of AI in Canada, including 850 megawatts of public-private funded AI data centres by 2030. It predicts that Canada will require 5.5 gigawatts of compute in commercial data centres over the next four years, equivalent to the annual electricity draw of millions of homes.

Prime Minister Mark Carney finally has a majority in the House of Commons after a year in office, and his government is gearing up to move even faster “building Canada strong for all.” Carney has repeatedly hammered home his desire to build at a pace and scale never seen before. His government has pushed through legislation like Bill C-5 that grants federal ministers sweeping powers to override most environmental laws in order to build major projects.
