Miley: Jerry Brown’s changes in 1998 led to Oakland’s broken government today. Here’s how to fix it.
Oakland’s city charter, the document defining who does what in City Hall, is failing its residents and must be changed. I know this firsthand. I was on the Oakland City Council in 1998 when Mayor-elect Jerry Brown convinced voters to pass Measure X, which transformed our government from a traditional council-manager structure to the unwieldy three-branches-of-government model we have today.
COMMENTARY: We Must Act Now to Avoid an Eviction Crisis
On Tuesday, Oakland City Councilmember-At-Large, Rebecca Kaplan announced her run for Alameda County Board of Supervisors District 3. Rebecca has been representing all of Oakland and was unanimously chosen as Oakland’s Vice Mayor by her colleagues. Prior to that, she represented the East Bay region as an elected AC Transit director, as a Board member on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, as a housing rights attorney, and State legislative aide.
Opinion - COVID-19 and the African American Community
Supervisor Nate Miley represents Alameda County District 4, which includes Pleasanton, Oakland and Castro Valley. The COVID-19 pandemic is hitting the African American community especially hard due to stark health disparities that were widespread well before this pandemic. Our Black community here in Oakland and Alameda County is now, once again, particularly at-risk for a dangerous health problem.
The 4 a.m. bar-closing bill would be bad for Oakland
I strongly oppose state legislation that would allow select cities, including Oakland and San Francisco, to introduce a pilot program permitting establishments to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, claims his bill (SB58) would invigorate local economies in California and fulfill the community’s desire for a more robust nightlife.
Open Forum: Oakland needs port jobs, funding for schools and housing, not a new ballpark
Perhaps the hottest clash in the Bay Area baseball world since the 1989 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s was interrupted by an earthquake is peaking now — the $600 million-and-counting, privately financed proposal by Oakland A’s owner John Fisher to build a stadium at Howard Terminal in Jack London Square. This proposal is backed by politicians and real estate developers.
Opinion: Measure would ease Alameda County child care crisis
In Alameda County, our youngest children face a harsh reality: The waiting list for quality child care is so long — 7,000 children and counting — that children are denied access to the early education they need and aren’t ready for kindergarten. Raising children of our own and now watching grandchildren grow, we know the power in developing children’s minds early and setting them up for K-12 success.
My Word: Must consider all options, but we must strike a deal
As Alameda County continues to learn more about stadium proposals and developments of our major sports teams, options facing our community leaders crystallize. To ensure that Oakland franchises stay, the rallying cry often is to build new stadiums for both the Raiders and A's. We've seen reports and proposals that have one common denominator -- a sizable gap in the building cost vs. the private funding secured.
