Malcolm football rallies past Raymond Central, keeps control of C-2 race
MALCOLM — Malcolm knew it had a target on its back after making headlines last week with a win over Bishop Neumann. A slow start that the Clippers worked hard to avoid caught up to them anyway on Friday. Then, the team that has looked sharp the last two weeks turned it up for a key district win. Malcolm beat rival Raymond Central 25-12 at home, keeping the Clippers at the top of their Class C-2 district.
Class D-1 preview: The defending champion, who to watch and key games
The competition in Class D-1 was hot last year, but only one all-state player returns this fall, setting up what could be one of the more wide-open races in the state. Defending champion: Sandy Creek Sandy Creek put together an undefeated season in 2024 to win its first state title, upending top-ranked Stanton in the championship game.
Class D-2 preview: The defending champion, who to watch and key games
Class D-2 was very competitive in the 2024 season, and the 2025 edition is shaping up to be the same way once again. Defending champion: Central Valley Central Valley dominated in the playoffs last season, winning by an average margin of victory of 44 points. The Cougars went 12-1 last season, with the only loss coming against Class D-1 runner-up Stanton.
Class D-6 preview: The defending champion, who to watch and key games
A surprise champion emerged from Class D-6 last season. The landscape has changed a little bit, but it is largely the same headed into the 2025 season. Defending champion: Stuart Stuart pulled off an upset in the Class D-6, taking down previously top-ranked Sumner-Eddyville-Miller with a late touchdown. It was the school's first state championship.
Class C-2 preview: The defending champion, who to watch and key games
Three straight state championships have gone to the same school in Class C-2. It will be an uphill challenge to top the champions, but can someone stop a four-peat this season? Defending champion: Norfolk Catholic Norfolk Catholic has been the gold standard of high school football in the state, but the Knights have been exceptionally dominant in Class C-2 with three straight state titles. Norfolk Catholic lost key pieces to graduation, but that happens every year, and the Knights march on.
Hickman wins 4th state title in 5 years
WAVERLY — Playing in an American Legion state championship game is nothing new to Hickman. It had already played in the Class B state tournament for a number of years. The first year with a playoff game to determine a state champion in Class B wasn't much of a bigger stage. Hickman defeated Waverly 7-3 on Saturday to win the Class B state championship at Waverly's Lawson Park.

Carpet Land wins second consecutive Mike Peterson/Coach K Tournament
Lincoln East players are no stranger to high school baseball success in the spring, nor in the American Legion season during the summer with Carpet Land. On Sunday, the Rugs won their second straight Mike Peterson/Coach K Tournament with a 10-9 win over Pinnacle Bank at Sandhills Global Youth Complex. Runs were not a problem in the early going as both teams exhausted all the pitching they could get — both were playing their sixth game in four days.
Lincoln Lutheran stifles Ashland-Greenwood in C-1 showdown: “We belong here”
ASHLAND — If Class C-1 No. 3 Lincoln Lutheran needed another win to cement itself as a state championship contender, it got one. And it was in impressive fashion on the road. The Warriors, behind a defense that held No. 4 Ashland-Greenwood to just eight points in the second half, defeated the Bluejays 47-28 on Thursday in Ashland. Nothing about the game felt as lopsided as the scoreline.
Lincoln East baseball standout Jeter Worthley announces flip from Michigan to Nebraska
Jeter Worthley spent the last two years committed to playing college baseball at Michigan. But on Saturday, he announced a change of plans. The Lincoln East utility player took to social media to announce that he was committed to Nebraska. He becomes the 16th known member of the Huskers' 2025 recruiting class. Worthley's older brother, Jalen, is a left-handed pitcher for Nebraska. The two played together at Lincoln East in 2022. Jeter is a two-time Super-State selection.
Nebraska soccer 'revved up' for start of Big Ten play after up-and-down nonconference slate
This isn't necessarily the start to the season Nebraska soccer envisioned when it reloaded with several key contributors from last year's Elite Eight group. The Huskers are 3-3, one year after they nearly ran the table in nonconference play and then heated up late in the Big Ten schedule to win the regular-season title. Still, Nebraska has been through this kind of stretch before.
'Going to reflect a lot': Duke deals Nebraska soccer its second loss of young season
LINCOLN — Duke handed Nebraska its worst home loss in more than three years, beating the Huskers 3-0 Thursday night at Hibner Stadium. Thursday’s result came against one of the best teams in the loaded ACC, the second in the first week of the season after the Huskers (1-2) began ranked No. 6 in the coaches poll. “I think Duke is a really good team and we were really well prepared for them,” NU sophomore Reese Borer said.
Campin' with the Silver Hawks: Southwest hoping to get past growing pains with speedy playmakers
Last season was difficult for Lincoln Southwest with a 3-6 finish in Grant Traynowicz's first season as the head coach for the Silver Hawks. It was a team that had a lot of turnover from 2022 when Southwest won eight games and made the playoff quarterfinals. Still, the group found a way to hang in games with a freshman quarterback and a plethora of underclassmen and inexperienced juniors.

A-5 Legion Baseball: Dush's pitching performance leads Pinnacle Bank past Union Bank
Linkin Dush had a few pregame nerves on Friday, the kind you get before making your first start on the mound in a postseason game. The Pinnacle Bank pitcher battled them through the first inning of the team’s first-round matchup against Union Bank (Lincoln Pius X) in the A-5 American Legion area tournament at Den Hartog Field. He gave up a pair of base hits in the first inning before settling in to pitch a complete game and lead the team from Lincoln Southwest to a 5-2 win.
High School Baseball: Justyn Rivera is making most of senior year for Mason City
Last season, Justyn Rivera watched the Mason City baseball team from the dugout while the Riverhawks had a successful season, finishing 23-17. It was especially difficult for Rivera after he started the 2023 season hot, hitting .426 with three home runs in the team's first 14 games. This summer, Rivera is back to starring on the diamond as a senior for the Riverhawks.

State Track and Field: Forest City girls rack up relay medals, Mitchell Smith medals twice

All of those, plus other individual finishes, earned the Indians a sixth-place finish in the 2A team standings. The most entertaining of the four races came on Saturday in the 400.
State Track and Field: Northwood-Kensett girls set state meet record in 1A shuttle hurdles

Those four were the group that finished second in the shuttle hurdle finals last year. This time around, it was the same lanes in the final heat on Saturday with the same two teams in the lanes next to them. And the Vikings got this one done.

State Track and Field: Osage's Johnston, Riceville's Zweibohmer grab third-place finishes
DES MOINES — A year after finishing third in the Class 2A 400-meter dash, Osage's Jacey Johnston liked it so much she did it again. The sophomore took home the bronze medal in the 400 with a time of 58.03 seconds behind Pella Christian's Bailey Vos' :57.08 and Estherville Lincoln Central's Jaselyne Anderson's :57.84. After a pair of difficult 100 and 200 races earlier in the morning, Johnston honed in on the 400 to post her best finish of the day. The time of :58.03 was a new personal best.
State Track and Field: Morton wins 3A discus title for second straight year
DES MOINES — Winning, particularly at Drake Stadium, is almost a formality at this point for Charlee Morton. Now, in four trips to Des Moines in the last two years, the Hampton-Dumont-CAL thrower has gone 7-0 in her events. Her latest came in the Class 3A discus on Thursday morning with a throw of 140 feet, 9 inches. Knoxville's Ciara Heffron finished second with a throw of 139-3. This is the second straight season she won the 3A discus title at state.
