Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! Love a good mechanical QWERTY typewriter; sticky keys and inky tape are potmarks of excellence!
How is social media changing news?
For the better and for the worst; mostly the latter, but holding out for the former.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
These days it's difficult to tell the difference.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To be honest and objective; to rise above your natural instinct to show preference without evidence.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I'm usually too busy crying...
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Direct and with as little embellishment as possible; if your story or idea is that great, it doesn't need unnecessary garnishment i.e. BS.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Any and everything available. Today's journalists have an embarrassment of amazing tools at their disposal; why not use them all?
What's your favorite social network?
They're all pretty bad, to be honest, but if you're twisting my arm I'd have to say Twitter. If nothing else, tweets are easier to ignore.
Who do you wish followed you?
Anyone who's tolerant and open-minded; rarities in this gilded age. Arrogant types, too, as long as they're entertaining about it.
Why did you become a journalist?
If others consider me a journalist then I must be doing something right.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Any story I've filed where I've had to learn something in the process is something to be proud of, especially when others point out faults.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Work, work, work, and work some more. There's no need to stop if it's something you want. Otherwise, don't bother starting.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime you can reach me is a pretty good time.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Nothing beats having to fill in for "marquee" guests when they fail to show up and you've got nothing else better in the pipeline. Go #2!
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
There's not enough characters in this summary box for what I've got...
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee. And more coffee. You know what I'm talking about...
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Exactly where I'm at - because it's away from the computer.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
CNN.com and FOXNEWS.com are often quite hilarious.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Despite evidence to the contrary, we're not ALL idiots.
