Review - Star Wars: The Acolyte
It is becoming an annual tradition for the culture wars to flare yet again with the delivery of fresh red meat from the fine folks over at the Walt Disney Corporation. Star Wars fans have had no shortage of opportunities to engage in their favorite activity: Hating Star Wars.
Review – Rebel Ridge - Geeks Under Grace
The remarkable director of Blue Ruin and Green Room has reemerged from a six-year break/delay in filmmaking (not counting a few episodes of True Detective Season 3) with a third movie of what might be considered the best trio of indie action films in the past decade. Following his 2007 indie-horror-comedy Murder Party, this director has successfully become a fan favorite among cinephiles.
Review – Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny - Geeks Under Grace
Ever since Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, two things have been certain—the studio would be producing more Star Wars movies, and the studio would be producing more Indiana Jones movies (and they would also do a Willow show that nobody watched, which would be buried in the Disney Vault forever due to tax purposes).
Review: Who Chose the Books of the New Testament?
I don’t usually review tracts, but it says something that this particular one caught my attention enough that it was worth giving a short shoutout. The Evangelical, Reformed, and Catholic worlds have no shortage of handout literature. Every church and parish in the U.S. seems to have a table covered in short pamphlets in the hope somebody walking into a church off the street might read a copy of Dark Dungeons and find God on the spot — something I’m convinced has never happened.
Review – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - Geeks Under Grace
There is a lot of talk nowadays about the decline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—and it is not hard to see why. With the notable popular exception of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the recent MCU films have felt like half measures, compromises, or underdeveloped ideas. Black Widow, The Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were all met negatively, and with Chadwick Boseman sadly passing, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever felt tragically kneecapped.
Review - Andor: Season 1
Happy May the Fourth! Stars Wars, as ever, remains complicated, controversial, and disagreeable. After eight years of Disney Star Wars, this is not new. The recent dustup over the creative failures in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi have only stood to continuously sour fans of Star Wars who felt put off by the sequel trilogy, to the point where it can feel somewhat hard to publicly celebrate even the original Star Wars films anymore.
Review – Horizon: Forbidden West - Geeks Under Grace
I began drafting this review of Horizon: Forbidden West (HFW) soon after concluding the game. The announcement of the PS5-exclusive Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC reminded me that I had some unfinished business with HFW. And by that I mean not just this review; HFW contains more sidequests than even the most dedicated completionist would want to endure.
Review: "Superman: Kryptonite"
Nathan Kiehn is a blogger at Keenlinks, a contributor at Geeks Under Grace, and the author of "The Gray Guard" ebook trilogy on Amazon. What Can Harm the Superman? A bullet hits the Man of Steel in the chest, the sudden impact causing the projectile to crumple in on itself and clatter to the ground with a small tink-tink-tink. It’s now as flat as a quarter, and about as harmless.
Review – Mothering Sunday - Geeks Under Grace
I feel like I’m not in a position to be as charitable to Mothering Sunday as I should be. I’m sick with COVID-19, I’ve barely left my apartment for five days except for the odd grocery run, and all my friends are watching cool action movies like RRR or Ambulance. Here I am watching Mothering Sunday; a nice quiet arthouse drama I’m a bit poorly inclined to enjoy at the moment. I shouldn’t beat up on Mothering Sunday too hard of course. I like genteel British dramas in the right context.
