Abortion … What do you think about it? Is it moral or immoral to have an abortion? Would you consider yourself to be pro-choice or pro-life? No matter where you stand on the issue, abortion is a highly debated topic in today’s society. In this animated video, Nathan Nobis will review some influential philosophical arguments about the morality of abortion.
When does “life” begin? When it comes to abortion, it depends on what you mean by "life"
"When does life begin?" Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was asked this question on the second day of her confirmation hearings to the Supreme Court. This question is asked in nearly all public discussions of abortion. Critics of abortion tend to think that the answer to this question — that "life" begins at conception, or soon after — is obvious, scientific, and shows that abortion is wrong, is indeed murder, and should be illegal.
Anti-vaxxers have co-opted the pro-choice slogan “My Body, My Choice." Does that even make sense?
The phrase "My Body, My Choice" is mostly known as a slogan used to justify abortion choice — encapsulating the idea that, if women have autonomy over their bodies, they can choose to get an abortion (or not) if they wish. Yet since the arrival of COVID-19, the phrase has taken on a new meaning, and in new circles: first, as a rationale for not wearing masks in public settings; and later, as a rationale for not getting vaccinated.
I’m a philosophy professor. The argument for making abortion illegal is illogical
As a philosophy professor who teaches logic and critical thinking — the study of good and bad arguments and forms of reasoning — I have been a keen observer of the arguments given for and against making abortion illegal or otherwise restricting abortion. Obviously, this is of vital importance at this moment in history: the Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling in the summer that could restrict or ban abortion across much of the United States.
College and University COVID-19 Vaccination Mandates: A Discussion on Ethics and Legal Nuance
1:00 PM ET College and University Covid-19 Vaccination Mandates: A Discussion on Ethics and Legal Nuance In March, Rutgers University announced it would require all students returning to campus in the fall to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Since then, roughly 450 U.S. colleges and universities have also announced that they too will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for returning students, including faculty and staff.
College Vaccination Mandates do not Violate Medical Ethics
Posted on June 30, 2021 at 3:32 PM Share by Nathan Nobis PhD In a June 14, 2021 opinion essay in the Wall Street Journal, physician-ethicist Aaron Kheriaty and law professor Gerard V. Bradley argue that “University Vaccine Mandates Violate Medical Ethics” (archived version). Their core claim is that requiring college students to be vaccinated for COVID treats these students as “mere means,” using them like “guinea pigs” for the potential benefit of others, and that’s unethical.

Why the case against abortion is weak, ethically speaking
Abortion rights are under attack. But ethics education can help — and defenders of abortion rights should recognize this, before it's too late. In recent years, over 250 abortion-restrictive laws have been proposed across 45 states. Arkansas and South Carolina are the most recent states to pass laws to ban abortion after 6 weeks into pregnancy, when a "heartbeat" can be detected in the fetus and before many women even know they are pregnant.
Abortion and Soundbites: Why Pro-Choice Arguments Are Harder to Make
Arguments are nowadays often presented as soundbites: as slogans, tweets, memes and even gifs. Arguments developed in detail often meet the response TL;DR (Too Long, Didn’t Read). This is unfortunate—especially when tackling the topic of abortion. Soundbites make many pro-life arguments seem stronger than they really are, while the complexities of pro-choice arguments can’t be readily reduced to soundbites. Pro-Life Soundbites Abortion is wrong because: fetuses are human or human beings.
