1 Introduction Approximately 750,000 Canadians live with heart failure (HF), with about 100,000 new patients diagnosed annually (1). HF is characterized by signs and symptoms of congestion (i.e., shortness of breath, orthopnea, jugular venous distention, and pedal edema) that result from structural and/or functional cardiac abnormalities causing elevated cardiac pressures and reduced cardiac output (2).
