The Throne Speech shook hopes that the Trudeau government will take meaningful action on a fast-growing problem Tuesday’s Speech from the Throne was intended to lay out the Trudeau government’s plan to, as the Liberals like to say in their public communications, “keep moving Canada forward.” But at least one constituency following the speech felt a distinct lack of progress by the time the Governor General wrapped up her address.
The B.C. floods are a mere hint of what climate change could do to the food supply
Barren store shelves will refill, and farmers will rebound in the short term, says food security expert Lenore Newman. But the system just can't take disaster after disaster. Officials in Abbotsford, B.C. predicted the worst on Tuesday night, as a month’s worth of rain gushed over parts of the province in just days. Floodwater from the Nooksack River on the U.S. side of the border had poured onto Sumas Prairie, the rich agricultural land reclaimed from what was once known Sumas Lake.
How blockchain could revolutionize food supply chains—and lower your grocery bill - Macleans.ca
The technology could hold the key to logistical problems that drive up prices. But will it also entrench the food industry's biggest players? The grassroots food insecurity initiatives putting an end to the 'starving student'
Student and admin-led efforts are leading the charge to stop food insecurity on Canadian university campuses University of Guelph: Student FoodBank The student association at the University of Guelph recognizes that students often have to make very difficult financial choices and are forced to compromise on both quality and quantity. The fight to end hunger on Canadian university campuses
Forty per cent of post-secondary students in Canada are food insecure. Schools—and other students—are finding solutions. It’s commonplace for post-secondary students to survive off a substandard diet of ramen noodles, boxed macaroni and cheese, and other affordable staples that are cheap, filling and quick to prepare. After tuition, rent and other expenses are settled, a student’s remaining budget for food can be scant, or even none. Food—for some university students in Canada—is an afterthought.

The sour taste of a soda tax in Newfoundland and Labrador
Synthesized with 50 grams of sugar in every can, Pineapple Crush has long been Newfoundland and Labrador’s exclusive delicacy—manufactured in the province and rarely found elsewhere in Canada. Merely an occasional treat for most, the distinctive pop has nevertheless endured, finding its own place in the province’s cultural identity. But for many living in rural areas, pop consumption is more than a matter of regional pride.
The Inuk woman using TikTok to expose high food prices in the North
'Food insecurity is not just about food insecurity,' says Kyra Flaherty. 'It ties into so many other societal problems.' Kyra Flaherty’s TikTok videos are a stark—and often staggering—look at the high costs of living in Canada’s North, even with more than $100 million committed in 2021 to subsidize food and essential items through Ottawa’s Nutrition North program.

I’m a young gay man. Here’s how sex-ed class failed to represent students like me
“Don’t have sex, because you will get pregnant and die.” Before today, this exclamation by the pedophiliac health teacher Coach Carr in the iconic film Mean Girls formed the bulk of my understanding of sex-ed class. But on this afternoon in my high school library, as my classmates and I giggled, two sexual health educators taught us how to put on a condom on a banana — or as per the demonstration — a wooden dildo painted as the universally-loved Nintendo character Yoshi.
Why these two LGBT YouTubers say ‘Restricted Mode’ hurts young people the most
