Abstract Carotenoids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from microalgae have applications in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and aquaculture. However, the large-scale use of these compounds is limited by high production costs associated with microalgae harvest and extraction.
