Everything costs too much — just make it stop!
Everything costs too much — just make it stop! Published 16 minutes ago By Frank Hill According to almost every poll, the No. 1 issue on everyone’s mind is the cost of buying things so they can live happy, healthy lives and provide for their families. That has been the case in most U.S. elections since the beginning of the republic.
NC - Rising tides and erosion wreaking coastal havoc
Rising tides, coupled with beach erosion are destroying once beautiful waterfront properties, causing them to crumble or be uninhabitable. Are these just photos taking during storms or is this the new reality? We asked an expert on coastal changes, Dr. Reide Corbett, executive director of the Coastal Studies Institute and professor at East Carolina University to help us understand.

Is the social safety net a springboard or cushion?
By Michael Walden | NC Spin Posted 9/22/22 There are few public issues that create more debate than the “social safety net.” By social safety net, I mean the set of government policies, programs, and regulations that provide … Subscriber-only content This content is only avaiable to subscribers. UNC BOG leaders trying to silence critics, sources and media outlets say
Allies of UNC System Board of Governors Chairman Harry Smith are trying to silence a critic on the board, Carolina Journal has learned. Board member Tom Fetzer is lining up votes to introduce an official resolution of censure against Steve Long, a board member at odds with Smith. The censure vote would take place during the Board of Governors’ meeting later this week at Appalachian State University in Boone. Carolina Journal phoned and emailed Fetzer for comment.
State continues to expand freedom
by John Hood, Syndicated columnist and NC SPIN panelist, March 16, 2019. While election scandals, national issues, and candidate announcements for 2019 and 2020 races have dominated the political headlines, North Carolina is continuing to head in the direction of greater freedom. Thank goodness. I believe North Carolina state and local governments have important responsibilities. They finance or deliver critical public services.
Don’t let the Democratic Party leave me
by D. G. Martin, One-on-one and host of NC Bookwatch, March 11, 2019. “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, it left me.” This declaration is not new. I heard it over and over again back in the early 1980s when old-line conservative Democrats, still smarting from Lyndon Johnson’s civil rights legislation, were looking for a different pathway. And they were finding one. It was blazed by Ronald Reagan and Jesse Helms.
“Thank you for what you do” - A tribute to Walter Jones
by Patrick Sebastian, Political strategist and NC SPIN panelist, February 18, 2019. After taking a semester off from ECU to run an eastern North Carolina Republican field office during 2008 election, I was back at school with a full schedule of classes – and a yearning to stay involved in politics. Jonathan Brooks, Congressman Walter Jones’ campaign consultant, suggested I apply for a paid internship with the congressman’s Greenville office.
After SPIN! Video - “What Didn’t You Get To Say? Rick Henderson discusses redistricting.”
This week on NC SPIN It’s been quite a week. First the Super Bowl, then the State of the Union, followed by beautiful and warm days. This week’s NC SPIN will talk about some of the events shaping our week. We start with a discussion about the setting of a date for the new State Board of Elections to hear […] Sometimes a teacher, often a student by Tom Campbell, Producer and Moderator of NC SPIN, February 7, 2019.
A rising statewide star
by Brad Crone, communications consultant and NC SPIN panelist, January 23, 2019. Most of the time, the political elites in Raleigh pay little attention to the happenings in our state’s largest city. For years, folks in Raleigh refer to Charlotte as ‘The Great State of Mecklenburg.’ So, it is somewhat noteworthy when a Mecklenburg politician can get the attention of the state’s political caste.
After SPIN! Video - “Who is likely to benefit in the 2018 elections?”
VIDEO After SPIN! “Question to Bev Perdue and Gene Arnold –the national indicators are that 2018 is going to be a banner year for Democrats across the country but it you look at the High Point poll and a Meredith College poll the two parties are just about neck and neck. From all you are seeing how is this year shaping up?
After SPIN! Video - “Should craft beer brewers have more freedom?”
After SPIN! “Question to Rufus Edmisten and Rick Henderson – The craft beer industry is growing rapidly in our state and on Friday craft beer brewers went to court to challenge two of our state’s laws, namely the provision that requires that after they sell more than 25,000 barrels they are required to use distributors. They are also challenging our franchise law which, they say gives distributors oppressive, one sided contracts and control of their product.
Where’s the sunshine?
by Tom Campbell, producer and moderator of NC SPIN, March 16, 2018. This week was Sunshine Week, not that we saw a lot of it, either meteorologically or metaphorically. What we got for the start of the week was dark clouds, some wind and even snow. Some might say it was symbolic of a week designated to shine the light on the need for open government. There is too much public business in Washington, Raleigh and local governmental units conducted in the dark.
Statistically, we don’t care about our children
by Joe Mavretic, former NC House Speaker and NC SPIN panelist, March 8, 2018. I have yet to read a serious study concluding that single parent homes raise better children than homes with both biological parents.
Skepticism is healthy, but political posturing is not
Since 2011, the Republican-led General Assembly has enacted transformational reforms. These include changes to our tax structure, how we pay for infrastructure, and more options for parents when choosing schools for their children. My colleagues and others have written extensively over the past seven years of the details and the benefits these reforms have had to the state’s economy, its business environment, and their positive impact on North Carolina families.

Charity game nights under fire as lottery gambling continues
Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed a bill authorizing charity game nights for fear that the gambling law carve-out would become a Trojan horse for video poker operators. If sustained, the Wednesday veto could dim fundraising prospects for nonprofit groups throughout North Carolina on the basis of a prediction whose outcome can’t be any worse than the state-run lottery we already have.
If you see something, say something
When the phone rings at 3 a.m. it’s a safe bet it’s not good news, especially when a police officer is on the other end of the call. The call came to a Salvation Army social worker and the officer reported he and his partner had been called to a local motel to investigate a disturbance. They found two young women, aged 19 and 16, who were part of a prostitution trafficking ring and the officer wanted help getting them to safety.
North Carolina is no longer classified as a democracy
by Andrew Reynolds, Political Science Professor, UNC Chapel Hill, published in The Charlotte Observer, December 22, 2016. In 2005, in the midst of a career of traveling around the world to help set up elections in some of the most challenging places on earth – Afghanistan, Burma, Egypt, Lebanon, South Africa, Sudan and Yemen, among others – my Danish colleague, Jorgen Elklit, and I designed the first comprehensive method for evaluating the quality of elections around the world.
After SPIN! Video - “Should more Legislative business be done publicly?”
VIDEO After SPIN! “Question to Joe Mavretic – When you were House Speaker you insisted on public budget committee meetings and got criticized because the process took so long. Today’s legislature does much of its business behind closed doors in caucus meetings. Which is the better way for public business to be conducted most efficiently?” Tags: #nc, #ncga, #ncgov, #ncpol Category: SPIN Blog, Videos
A lesson on lockdowns
As I drove my 5-year-old daughter to kindergarten on a recent morning, I reminded her that we were going out of town for a few days at Thanksgiving to visit family in Ohio. Her first response: “I don’t want to miss a day of school.” I told her she wouldn’t — that school is closed those days for the holiday — and asked her why she didn’t want to miss a day.
