Here's how you sculpt a medieval statue in the 21st century
On a damp spring morning in the ancient English city of York, a group of schoolchildren stopped in front of the iconic York Minster cathedral and broke into giggles, sharing uneasy looks. Built over a period of 250 years and consecrated in 1472, the church is the largest Gothic cathedral in Britain. It features three huge medieval towers adorned with shimmering stained-glass windows.

At City & State, we’re lucky to be able to illuminate the arcana of New York politics for our audience. Where else will you find procurement reform on the cover of a magazine? Creative Director Andrew Horton, who comes up with cover concepts each week, highlighted a few of his favorites from 2023.
Forum: County launches mobile dental care program for school children
A trip to the dentist, for people who are fortunate enough to have a “dental home,” is a twice-a-year tradition that might not always be comfortable, but is critically important to our health. Going to the dentist regularly doesn’t just mean a polished smile; it could save your life. If something goes wrong with your teeth and it isn’t addressed, it can be the start of a whole series of problems – or it could be a warning that there’s another health problem somewhere else in your body.
The Duke-Minneapolis connection: 'We love it there,' Mike Krzyzewski says
DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke Basketball Museum sits on a perch, one flight of stairs above historic Cameron Indoor Stadium. Across the courtyard lies Krzyzewskiville, a makeshift campground where students live in tents covered by tarps for more than a month in anticipation of the enemy’s arrival: the North Carolina game. Museum visitors find a trove of memorabilia befitting college hoops royalty. The room also has a distinctly Minnesota flavor.

Whisky Made Simple: Dom’s Jargon Buster Part 2
The world of whisky is a confusing one, full of jargon and technical descriptors. So Dom cuts to the chase and explains what’s what… The greatest irony of whisky is that although it is the subject of dozens of books and scores of websites, reams of tasting notes, and impassioned debates, at the very core it is the simplest drink made of just grain, yeast and water.
Hidden gems - Balvenie
Balvenie is a wonderful distillery making some of the world’s finest malts, says Dom. It’s well earth a visit, but leave yourself plenty of time… As every serious whisky fan knows, if you’ve seen one distillery, you really haven’t seen them all. Unlike big breweries, which are soulless, featureless, people-free factories that have all the appeal of Derby railway station’s waiting room in winter, whisky distilleries are defined by their individualism, personality and quirkiness.
The 12 malts of Christmas - part 5
It’s been a great year for whisky. As Christmas and Hogmanay approaches Dom continues his Christmas countdown 4. Cardhu 15 Year Old, 40%, £79 Cardhu is the Speyside distillery most closely linked to Johnnie Walker and it produces a fresh, sweet, fruit malt which all but defines the Speyside style. At 15 years a rich maltiness, some oaky spice and trop[ical fruits add complexity to the clean apple and pear core of the whisky, while vanillas add some chewy sweetness.
12 Malts of Christmas
Caol Ila probably makes as much unpeated whisky as it does peated, so somewhere between the two would seem logical. This is all to do with flavour, and there is a delightful peaty smokiness. But what makes it stand out are the subtler spice and citrus notes and a coastal brininess. Unusual but idea for dull winter days. At its high end bottles of the Dalmore command thousands and tens of thousands of pounds. But even at the comfort end the quality shines through.
The 12 malts of Christmas - part 2
It’s been a great year for whisky. As Christmas and Hogmanay approaches Dom continues his Christmas countdown Isle of Jura whiskies have been something of a revelation in recent years. The original liquids have improved immensely, the range has been stylishly repackaged, and new releases have been outstanding. This is a fresh and fruity release, with citrus and orange fruits, some nuttiness and stem ginger. A hint of dark chocolate in there somewhere, too.
The 12 malts of Christmas
It’s been a great year for whisky. As Christmas and Hogmanay approaches Dom starts his Christmas countdown On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…well almost certainly not a bottle of single malt whisky. Still, you can’t have too many pairs of socks or slippers, can you? But with Christmas on the horizon, I got to thinking, what would I request from friends and family if they were to ask?
Hidden gems - Ardbeg
Ardbeg enjoys iconic status both as a single malt and as a distillery. And a visit to it it never disappoints says Dom Imagine the scene… A few elderly folk are in the Old Kiln Cafe at Ardbeg enjoying a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Then the cafe door flies open and in come a posse of men. All are huge, both in height and width. They have flowing blond hair, some have piercings and/or face tattoos and are wearing cowboys boots, leather and denim.
Hidden gems - Kininvie
Well it’s hidden, anyway, says Dom, and the latest malt to be released from the distillery is definitely a gem If you’ve never heard of Kininvie Distillery, then don’t worry – you’re not alone. Kininvie is the third and smallest of William Grant’s distilleries and is hidden behind its bigger brothers – Glenfiddich and Balvenie. If the former is a metaphorical mansion house, and the latter the estate farm buildings and cottages, then Kininvie is the rickety garden shed out the back.
What I Liked This Week
And the winners are…Jim Murray’s bang on the money, says Dom For avid whisky fans there are four annual highlights around this time of the year: Diageo’s launch of its special releases; Buffalo Trace’s release of its batches of great bourbons such as George T Stagg and Eagle Rare; the arrival of the new Malt Yearbook edited by Ingvar Ronde; and the publication of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. Murray is a marmite figure and you either love him or hate him. And he’s not without controversy.
Hidden gems - Oban
Oban Distillery is a hidden gem in the truest sense of both words. And for Dom it symbolises excitement and adventure The boat should be here. It was here six hours ago when we put our rucksacks on board and headed out for the evening. It’s very dark now, but I’m pretty certain our boat has disappeared. “You have to go down the ladder,” a happy sounding colleague announces from the darkness behind me. “The tide’s gone out and the boat’s 10 feet lower than it was.
Cocktail of the Week - Light My Fire
For many it’s going to be a damp Bonfire Night. But Dom has found the perfect cocktail I don’t know what it’s like where you are, but here in the East of England we’re looking at a damp and windy Bonfire Night and our fireworks are already looking bedraggled and unhappy. Perhaps you’re planning an event this evening, or you’re attending an official fireworks display over the weekend. Either day I’m not sure they won’t turn out to be a damp squib.
Hidden gems: Isle of Jura Distillery
The Isle of Jura distillery has been enjoying a great deal of success of late, says Dom, but boy does it take some getting to! Imagine if you will, early morning on the sea shore of Jura. Legendary master blender Richard Paterson has just thrown sea water into your face ‘to remind you you’re alive’. Then your eyes are drawn to the skies, where nature has silently taken centre stage, and five kestrels are battling a golden eagle to keep it from their nests. ‘Awesome’ doesn’t even get close.
Diageo Special Releases Part 2
In the second part of his three part series, Dom checks out the latest releases from three big distillery names I hold New Zealand citizenship and am a massive All Blacks fan, and have been since I moved over to the Land of the Long White Cloud in 1987. And for hours before the rugby world cup semi final last weekend I was a nervous wreck.
Diageo Special Releases Part 1
“Diageo has surpassed itself with this year’s nine Special Releases”, says Dom It’s arguably the highlight of the whisky enthusiast’s year – a selection of rare and special whiskies from the darkest corners of Diageo’s distilleries, presented with fanfare, panache and style. Diageo’s Special Release collection are an annual release of several rare and special whiskies. They are delivered at cask strength, and among them will be very rare and sought after malts.
