Digital transformation tools improve plant sustainability and maintenance
Digital Transformation Insights To avoid air leaks, companies are working digital transformation tools into their wheelhouse for predictive maintenance benefits, such as preventing unplanned downtime and limiting costs. When pneumatic systems are set to diagnose leaks and calculate proper pressure ratios, companies can see a reduction in compressed air consumption and energy costs, which help maintain sustainability goals and help optimize energy costs.
A new era of thermowell-free temperature measurement Original
Figure 1: ABB’s TSP-341 noninvasive temperature solution treats the pipe itself as the sensor, taking readings from the surface and then using software to predict the true medium temperature based on variables such as ambient conditions, insulation and process and medium variables like volume, pressure and viscosity. Courtesy: ABB Measurement & Analytics Thermowells have been widely used for many years for measuring the temperature of flowing liquids.
Testing the physical infrastructure with industrial Ethernet
When it comes to deploying Ethernet network infrastructure to support data transmission, certification testing is the key to ensuring that the supporting cable plant is installed correctly, complies with industry standards and will support applications. Certification testing measures key performance parameters and compares them to industry standards set by TIA or ISO/IEC, with results indicating compliance with the standard and/or a specific category or class of cable.
Profibus PA overview and description
Profibus process automation (PA) is used in process manufacturing applications. The physical layer of Profibus PA is manchester encoded bus powered (MBP), and the physical layer for Profibus DP is RS-485. Even though a different physical layer is employed, Profibus PA is the same protocol as Profibus DP. Process automation environments, while typically requiring slower procedures, might also be characterized by explosive or hazardous environments.
Understanding the difference between Profinet RT and Profinet IRT
In the Profinet world, Profinet real time (RT) and Profinet isochronous real time (IRT) are common terms. Profinet RT and IRT can be employed to deliver data within a Profinet network. Profinet RT is equipped in all Profinet components and fulfills the majority of industrial automation timing requirements. Profinet IRT is optional as it is only required in high-performance applications.
Hardware needed for building a Profinet network
When building an industrial network with Profinet, users will employ three major pieces of hardware: controllers, devices, and general infrastructure. Controllers can be programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCSs), or programmable automation controllers (PACs). Devices can be input/output (I/O) blocks, radio frequency identification (RFID) readers, drives, process instruments, proxies or even other controllers.
How Profinet works for manufacturers
Profinet is an open Industrial Ethernet solution based on international standards. It is a communication protocol designed to exchange data between controllers and devices in an automation setting. It was introduced in the early 2000s and is the most well-adopted Industrial Ethernet solution. Since Profinet is an open standard, hundreds of manufacturers have developed Profinet products.
Graphene-based biosensors used to develop mass COVID-19 tests
Iowa State University engineers are using graphene-based biosensors to develop better, cheaper, quicker, more accessible testing for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The studies are part of two federal programs looking for better ways to test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 infections, and, potentially, any future viral outbreaks.
System integration award winners announced
By Control System Integrators Association (CSIA) April 20, 2021 The Control System Integrators Association (CSIA) announced its 2021 award winners. 2021 Charlie Bergman “Remember Me” Award Joe Martin, President, CSIA-Certified Member Martin CSI, Plain City, Ohio The prestigious Charlie Bergman Award recognizes individuals who have actively participated in association activities, published articles in industry publications, and served in leadership roles of the association.
Chemical manufacturers, oil & gas industries face growing technological obsolescence Original
Results of a recent CFE Media survey, sponsored by engineering corporation M S Benbow & Associates, Metairie, LA, illustrates the changing landscape for instrumentation and control systems in industrial environments. Survey respondents questioned the long-term viability of the installed base of process control and automation systems in chemical manufacturing, oil & gas and other industries.
Leveraging the 5G network to wirelessly power IoT devices
Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have uncovered an innovative way to tap into the over-capacity of 5G networks, turning them into “a wireless power grid” for powering Internet of Things (IoT) devices that today need batteries to operate. The Georgia Tech inventors have developed a flexible Rotman lens-based rectifying antenna (rectenna) system capable, for the first time, of millimeter-wave harvesting in the 28-GHz band.
Energy management for industrial networks
Energy is one of the most significant cost burdens in many manufacturing facilities. Automation components consume a large amount of energy during production. Additionally, energy consumption can also be significant during production-free periods (see diagram below). PROFIenergy offers energy-saving capabilities in automation systems. It enables the deployment of smart energy management strategies over Profinet.
Functional safety networks for Ethernet communication protocols
Functional safety (fail-safe) is the overall part of safety which aims to prevent hazards due to the incorrect functioning of industrial machinery. Traditionally, functional safety systems relied on separately wired circuits that are expensive to build, commission, and maintain. Nowadays, functional safety can be done over the fieldbus, shifting from safety in hard relays to safety in logic. PROFIsafe can provide functional safety over the bus.
Designing a microgrid system: Li-ion versus gas generator
Microgrids using multiple sources of generation have the potential to add resiliency to both the grid and to customer sites. Additionally, if low carbon sources of electrical generation are used such as solar photovoltaics (PV), these microgrids can significantly reduce the energy carbon footprint (see Figure 1). However, the solar resource is variable and intermittent, requiring that other sources of generation, or energy storage, are used for a complete and resilient design.
COVID-19 accelerates the digitalization of enterprises

Manufacturing digital transformation is accelerating innovation, agility and adaptability. Factory labor shortages can be helped with automation, 5G, smart factories.
Automated container terminal streamlines U.S. supply chain
Container terminals are vital links in the U.S. supply chain between manufacturers and consumers. The TraPac San Pedro Bay facility in Los Angeles shows how automation enabled terminal operators to move goods more quickly and efficiently, while doing more to protect the environment and workers. The facility is the first automated container terminal in North America (see Figure 1).
Bridging the gap between electrical infrastructure and renewables
Recent power outages have been attributed to capacity shortfalls, which played a major role in the California Independent System Operator’s (CAISO’s) ability to maintain reliable service on the grid. On Sept. 6, 2020, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) made a rare move of issuing an emergency order under the Federal Power Act (FPA) to authorize the maximum operation of three natural gas-fired facilities on CAISO’s grid. Things could get worse.
