Simple Backpacking Navigation - Backpacking Light
You are here: Home / Blog / How to use Turn-by-Turn Directions for Simple Backpacking Navigation Introduction After some Type 2 fun triggered by following an overgrown path, I decided that for solo hikes, I would stay on well-maintained trails using simple backpacking navigation. Hoping to keep out of similar situations, I dragged an impressively heavy collection of paper maps on every trip after that.

Nemo Airpin Stake Review
Introduction NEMO Airpins are ultralight aluminum stakes designed with notches that function as a three-point locking system. This review is not comprehensive – but I did measure the holding power of the stake and share my experience with it in a limited number of backcountry environments. NEMO markets the self-locking design of these stakes as a means of eliminating the need to use knots or other tensioners for guy-lines.
Sleeping Pad R-Values: Not That Useful
Overview Lightweight backpackers have long complained about how hard it is to compare the warmth of different sleeping pads. Recently, three pad makers and retailers announced that they would use a new standard for measuring sleeping pad insulation. And in 2020, REI and MEC will require all their suppliers to report those values. At first glance, this looks great. But the devil is in the details.
Keeping Gear Handy on the Trail with Multi-Use Accessory and Utility Pouches

Fastpackers and FKTers know this well – it makes them incredibly efficient on the trail, allowing them to log long miles in short periods. Not just because they’re moving particularly fast, but because they just keep moving.

Book Review: On Trails by Robert Moor
You are here: Home / Blog / Book Review: On Trails by Robert Moor How do trails form? Why do trails form? Come to think of it, what is a trail? These are but a few of the (deceptively simple) questions author Robert Moor attempts to answer in his book On Trails (Simon and Schuster, 2016). Moor – a lifelong backpacker and Appalachian Trail thru-hiker in addition to being a writer – approaches his subject with lyrical language and journalistic due-process.

The following image shows (most!) of the chairs and seats included in this gear guide.
Lightweight Backpacking Chairs: REI Flexlite Air Chair vs. Helinox Chair Zero
The purpose of this article is to review the Helinox Chair Zero to the REI Flexlite Air Chair and see if there are any meaningful differences. The Helinox Chair Zero is probably the most beloved lightweight camping chair among hikers who pay attention to the weight of their kit. The reason for this is that when it was introduced, it was the lightest “real” chair on the market.
Sawyer Micro-Squeeze Review (First Looks)
The Sawyer Micro Squeeze is the latest in Sawyer’s ongoing line of palm-sized hollow-fiber water filters. In theory, the Micro combines the flow-rate of the Sawyer Squeeze with the weight savings of the Sawyer MINI. Like its older brothers, the Micro is versatile and easily connected to any 28mm water bottles, including, of course, the beloved Smartwater Bottle. That being said, this review is not a head-to-head comparison of the three available Sawyer filters.
Upright Canister Stove Reviews, StoveBench Tests, and Gear Guide
By Andrew Marshall, Ryan Jordan, and Chase Jordan This gear guide features lightweight upright canister stoves for backpacking (i.e., a canister stove that weighs less than 4 oz (113 g) that sits on top of a canister of fuel).
Nemo Siren Review (First Looks)
The Nemo Equipment Siren Quilt is a warm-weather backpacking quilt that packs a feature rich, ultralight punch. The Siren has a silky feel, comes with a well-designed stuff sack, and boasts a lifetime warranty from Nemo. I found the pad attachment system to be a little problematic, however.
Hyperlite Mountain Gear Dirigo 2 Tent Review
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Dirigo 2 is a two-person, hybrid single/double wall, two-vestibule Dyneema Composite Fabrics (DCF) tent that can be pitched with two trekking poles. Its unique features include breathable DCF end panels for condensation resistance and an apex pole that (purportedly) improves structural stability.
Timmermade Waterbear Hood Review (First Look)
The Timmermade Waterbear Hood The Timmermade Waterbear Hood is a cottage-crafted down sleeping hood with a twist – a Climashield tunnel for warming the air around your face on extra-cold nights. I used the Waterbear Hood on a frigid eastern Sierra late-winter trip. It kept me cozy in my quilt while providing flexible options for warmth in variable shoulder-season conditions. Features Hybrid down / synthetic insulation construction.

Photo: Mountainsmith The Zerk 40L Fastpack The Zerk 40L Fastpack represents Mountainsmith’s first stab at an ultralight backpack aimed specifically at thru-hikers doing big mile days with few breaks. Inspired by trail running packs, the Zerk is designed to give you access to food, water, and essential gear while being comfy enough to leave on all day. The design is centered around wide, thick shoulder straps and a removable foam framesheet.

Nemo Switchback Sleeping Pad Review (First Looks)
The Nemo Switchback sleeping pad has a bright orange hue which is the first thing that catches your eye. The eye-popping color isn’t the real selling point in NEMO’s new foldable closed-cell sleeping pad, though; it’s the ratio between its thickness and packed size. Until now, Therm-a-Rest’s Z Lite Sol has been difficult to improve upon.
MYOG Ultralight Fastpacking 'Tivy'
In preparation for an August 2018 attempt to fastpack (run/hike) the 71-mile Section J of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in two days, I made this four ounce shelter (which I call the Tivy). Starting at Stevens Pass and heading south, my plan on the first day consists of running 50 miles (80.5 km) and making camp near Lemah Creek. The second day, I would finish the remaining 21 miles (32 km) to emerge from the woods at Snoqualmie Pass.
First Impressions: Black Diamond Glidelite Ski ("Snow Trekkers") Review (Video)
I’ve been using the new Black Diamond Glidelite Snow Trekker Skis (“trekking skis”) this winter. I have the 127-cm model with Universal Bindings, which can be used with any type of footwear. I’ve been skiing in Altra Lone Peak Mids (usually with a neoprene overboot) with them this winter. This is a Flash Review meant to communicate my initial experience with the product – it’s in no way a comprehensive review that reflects use of this product in a wide range of conditions.
Navigation & GPS App Reviews & Gear Guide
With the rise of the smartphone within the last decade there has been a corresponding rise in navigation apps. As the hardware has become more durable with longer battery life, as well as the growing affordability in solar powered chargers and battery banks, the use of a smartphone as navigation in the field has become much more practical than it has been in the past.
Tarptent Stratospire Li Review
The Tarptent Stratospire Li pitched in the Eastern Sierras above Lake Tahoe. The Tarptent Stratospire Li is a roomy and stable two-person DCF shelter with well-considered features. It sets up quickly, stays taut in rough conditions due to DCF construction and Tarptent’s proprietary built-in tensioners, and has enough chops for year round use. I tested the Stratospire Li during an eight-day trek through Montana’s Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in the summer/fall shoulder season.

Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 Backpack Review
Introduction The Mariposa 60 is an internal frame pack that falls somewhere between an ultralight pack and a medium-weight pack capable of carrying heavier loads. It is considered a high volume ultralight backpack. Gossamer Gear recently re-designed the hipbelt with the purpose of improving load distribution and increasing pocket size. I’ve recently begun enjoying treks with my children. For this reason, I’m carrying a little more weight than I once did.

Trekking poles might be considered essential by trekkers who spend a lot of time off trail in steep, mountainous terrain.
Sierra Designs High Route 1FL Tent Review
The Sierra Designs High Route 1P Tent is a spacious three-season tent designed for withstanding variable conditions while remaining (sort of) light. The High Route is versatile in relation to weather, usability, and functionality. It was designed to the specifications of Andrew Skurka, long-distance backpacker and a National Geographic “Adventurer of the Year” recipient. The field testing consisted of a multiple-day trip in the Belt range of Montana during the last week of September.
KS Ultralight Gear R-50 Backpack Review
The KS Ultralight R-50 is a backpack designed for a variety of applications including climbing, hiking, snow sports, and many others. It boasts a minimalist but rugged design that could appeal to ultralight backpackers looking for gear able to withstand a beating. I tested this backpack while guiding for Backpacking Light in the early and mid-summer over two separate trips. The varying conditions of each trek gave me an opportunity to fully explore this pack.
