Robert Samuels MILAN – Mikhail Shaidorov packed for the Olympics with Lego bricks for distractions, joggers and T‑shirts for practice, his outfits for his two programs in the men's figure skating competition and, just in case, a giant panda costume. The panda costume would come in handy in the off chance he won an Olympic medal. The top athletes are usually invited to skate at a special show — and Shaidorov imagined performing as his favorite member of the Ursidae family of mammals.

Robert Samuels MILAN — When Alysa Liu realized she won the women's figure skating final, she ran to one of the Japanese skaters she just outperformed. She and Ami Nakai, who was leading going into Thursday's competition and ended up with the bronze medal, had no beef. They grabbed shoulders and jumped and down in celebration. The silver medalist, disappointed Japanese skater Kaori Sakamoto , cried near the rink.
