1. Introduction Meckel’s diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, with a prevalence of 1–3% in the general population [1,2,3,4,5]. It is the result of incomplete obliteration of the vitelline (omphalomesenteric) duct, which connects the primitive intestine to the yolk sac in early fetal life [2,6]. By definition, MD is a true diverticulum, as it is surrounded by all the layers of the small bowel wall [7].
