The best rip-roaring adventure fantasy novels
Who am I? Fantasy hooked me as a child with tales of Narnia and Harry Potter, transporting me to wondrous new worlds and possibilities. That sense of adventure got into my blood and I’ve traveled the world from the eastern edges of Afghanistan to wandering Caribbean haunts, exploring cathedrals of Europe, and hiking the jungles of Southeast Asia. Through it all, I’ve never stopped reading, chasing after the next adventure.
Kings of the Wyld
Overall 5 out of 5 stars Performance 4 out of 5 stars Story 5 out of 5 stars A lot better than I expected Get this out of the way quick, there is a constant running joke/reference to mercenaries be like rock bands. I'm not sure why the author leaned in so hard on this and while it can be light hearted and fun sometimes, it is so prevalent that it becomes a bit heavy handed sometimes. In the end though I think it makes the story less intense and more enjoyable.
Priest of Bones Author Peter McLean Picks His 5 Favorite Fantasy Debuts
Priest of Bones isn’t my first novel–it’s actually my fourth–but it is my first real fantasy book. In changing genres from contemporary crime fantasy to proper “swords and horses” fantasy, I’m reaching a whole new audience, and I now feel like a debut author all over again, with all the excitement and nerves that brings with it. With that in mind, I’d like to celebrate four of my favorite fantasy debuts from the last couple of years, and a forthcoming book for you to look forward to as well.
Nicholas Eames: Amazon.ca: Kindle Store
I pre-ordered this after absolutely loving Eames' Kings of the Wyld. Though this serves as a sequel of sorts reading the first book isn't required, but you'll get a few unessential references you wouldn't get otherwise. This book revolves around Tam, a bard looking to leave her sleepy town, who gets the opportunity to do so when the titular character's band "Fable" comes through town.
Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames, Paperback
"George R. R. Martin meets Terry Pratchett."?Buzzfeed Books on Kings of the Wyld "A fantastic read, a rollicking, page-turning, edge-of-your-seat road-trip of a book. Great characters, loveable rogues that I genuinely cared about and all manner of fantastical monsters. All spiced with a sly sense of humour that had me smiling throughout.
Fantasy-Faction’s Best Fantasy Books of 2017
2017 was a heck of a year! And we mean that we a giant *SIGH* right after it. But while the world around us seem to darken as the year went by, in the universe of fantasy fiction there were hundreds of new stars born to lighten our paths! It was a great year for debuts and for series ending. There were dragons and gods, courts and assassins. Light battling dark and sometimes even dark battling dark.
Kings of the Wyld. Book Review
Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames Orbit, p/b, 528pp, £8.99 Reviewed by Joely Black What happens when an author decides to mix Dungeons and Dragons adventure with rock and roll? Kings of the Wyld does. Eames’ debut is a delightful mixture of fantasy quest, rock and roll history, and an exploration of aging and father daughter relationships. Clay Cooper is a former adventurer. As a member of Saga, he had become a legendary warrior, famous for his exploits with his band.
