What was your first job as a journalist?

Breaking Financial News writer.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Once, in high school. Our computer teacher was trying to make a point. Still, no one understood.

How is social media changing news?

At first, it was all about sharing news. Now Social media is a source of news.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

None, I don't do fiction.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A seeker of truth on behalf of the general public.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I like pitches that are more specific to the topic the article will address.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Camera, laptop, smartphone, office applications, editing software (Grammarly, Photoshop, Paint)

What's your favorite social network?

I taught English to grade 2-4 Somali kids. The challenge was they wrote English from left to write but I helped them correct that.

Who do you wish followed you?

Bill Gates: His affection for improving the lives of the underprivileged in society is quite moving. I am from Africa.

Why did you become a journalist?

I am curious by nature. I question everything. Journalism provides the right platform for people like me to interrogate issues.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I wrote a couple of articles for the annual school magazine.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I once did a piece for Value Walk on Basel III Rules and their impact on banks. A 3-part series.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

It's ok to twist things a bit as long as you get the facts right.

When's the best time to pitch you?

The weekend. I am likely to commit more time to your pitch, which enhances the chances of giving a go ahead.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

It was for an article I was planning to write the following day. The pitcher took that away from me and I couldn't wait to see the result.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

It was a general article idea with no specifics.

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee. Always.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On the field, gathering raw data from sources. But I sometimes go swimming.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I like the HBR (Harvard Business Review) blog

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I have nothing to say about fashion and lifestyle.
