I'm a hospice physician in Wisconsin. I'm still watching people die from COVID. Please get the facts and get vaccinated.
None of us expected the pandemic to last this long. We are all tired of masks, sick of restrictions, and of hearing the horror stories of people dying of a virus unnecessarily. I am a hospice physician, and sadly, I am seeing COVID patients dying of lung failure, kidney failure and a variety of other problems. The most frequent cases are patients who cannot clear their COVID pneumonia and die from hunger for air. Suffocating is a terrible way to die.

Where we went wrong in our fight against COVID-19 -- and what we can do about it now
We’re all tired of hearing about COVID-19. But since it is still with us and will be for the foreseeable future, let’s talk about what has happened and what we can all do to bring a quicker end to the pandemic. While COVID has clearly become a political football in this country, there are some undeniable facts: • More than 650,000 Americans have died of COVID or COVID-related problems.

Opinion: The U.S. and Wisconsin are battling coronavirus with an outdated system. Here's how we can revamp our approach to public health.
We are far from the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. And given the long road we face, it's a good time to step back, assess what we've learned, and create a plan to help this country through the next phases. If we set aside politics for a moment, we can certainly all agree that the world was not prepared to face a pandemic of this magnitude.

Opinion: Let's stop politicizing the coronavirus. Look to science and facts to keep one another safe.
For most of us around the world, the last six months have been, to say the least, difficult and confusing. And now many of us are experiencing "pandemic fatigue." As a physician, I’m frequently asked by family, friends and colleagues, “How are you staying healthy during the pandemic?” First, let’s set aside the politics of the issue. In a presidential election year, it is no surprise that issues around the pandemic have become political.
Commentary: Partnering with startups can help systems find their entrepreneurial side
We're living in a unique moment in the history of healthcare. It's never been more important for leading organizations to start making bold changes that will help them nimbly adapt to the diverse needs of patients and better integrate new technologies that improve the quality of care. It's often said that healthcare is years behind the digital revolution curve.

Is Milwaukee the next great technology hub? With a coordinated effort, it could be
Digital disruption and technology are transforming the way we communicate, educate, travel, bank and approach our health. While we all reap the benefits of these life-altering innovations, there’s even more to be gained if we all play a role in driving them — as citizens, employers and community leaders. When most people think about tech-heavy regions booming with new jobs and new industry, they think of places such as Silicon Valley. But Milwaukee? You better believe it.
Turkal: Access, coverage are key elements in health care debate
As Washington is seemingly taking a fresh look at health care reform, it is even more important that we consider the fundamentals to sustainable reform that have been lost in the debate. Health care coverage and how we approach access to health care are profoundly important to the health and well being of our country. As a nation, we spend enough in total on health care — some might say too much.
Turkal: A way forward on health care reform
Sometimes to move forward, you need to take a step back. Maybe it’s time we as a country candidly acknowledge our deep divisions on health care policy and work to develop a framework on the fundamentals on which we can agree. I don’t believe we will ever get to sustainable, comprehensive reform strategies without a bipartisan approach.
Column: Bipartisan action essential on health care reform
Sometimes to move forward, you need to take a step back. While the dust is settling from the nonstop political analysis surrounding U.S. Senate action — or as we heard Tuesday — inaction on health care, maybe it’s time we as a country candidly acknowledge our deep divisions on health care policy and work to develop a framework on which fundamentals we agree. I don’t believe we will ever get to sustainable, comprehensive reform strategies without a bipartisan approach.
Turkal: The time is now for real health care reform
Like so many Americans, I’ve been listening to the ongoing federal health care debate for some time. From my position as CEO of the largest health care system in the state of Wisconsin and as a family physician, I believe it’s time to weigh in on this topic. We are missing the big picture and losing site of those who should be at the center of the debate — our patients.
We're just beginning to fix health care
Just for a moment, let's set aside the significant Supreme Court decision on the Affordable Care Act subsidies, the talk about a presidential legacy and the political back-and-forth that accompanies major events these days. Because when it comes to really improving health care, we've only just begun.
