Evidence of Biological Self-Organization in Spatial Patterns of a Common Tropical Alga
No AccessNatural History Note Abstract Tropical reef communities contain spatial patterns at multiple scales, observable from microscope and satellite alike. Many of the smaller-scale patterns are generated physiologically (e.g., skeletal structures of corals at <1-m scale), while some of the larger patterns have been attributed to scale-dependent feedbacks (e.g., spur and groove reefs at 10–100-m scales).

‘Deadpool’ Demolishes Box Office Records with $135 Million
Wow. Just… wow. When covering the box office you get used to a certain level of hyperbole, but I am here to tell you that the hype is all real when it comes to Deadpool. According to studio estimates, the Tim Miller-directed pic has earned an incredible $135 million for the three-day weekend and is headed above $160 million for the four-day holiday frame. That is nearly double what the industry expected from the R-rated superhero pic.
‘The Martian’ Falls Short of October’s Box Office Record
For a while there it looked like The Martian might set a new opening record for October, but as of this morning Gravity remains the box office champ. Fox is reporting that The Martian earned an estimated $55 million in its first three days – a bit lower than the $55.78 million Gravity claimed on this same weekend in 2013. But before we get too comfortable with this outcome, the obvious must be stated: less than $1 million separates The Martian’s estimate and Gravity’s record.
Box Office: MINIONS Claims Second Best Animated Debut
For the second frame in a row, an animated title is number one at the box office. But unlike last weekend, when Monday actuals put Inside Out on top in place of Jurassic World, everyone saw today’s win for Minions coming. Since the little, yellow beings first appeared in 2010’s Despicable Me, their commercial appeal has been hard to deny. Now, as expected, the first film to put the creatures front and center has easily secured the highest opening among the three Despicable Me releases.
Box Office: JURASSIC WORLD Edges Out INSIDE OUT Again
It looked like the holiday frame would give Pixar’s Inside Out the advantage, but it was not to be. Jurassic World edged out the animated hit with an estimated $30.9 million to IO’s $30.1 million. So at least for now, Inside Out will remain the only Pixar feature to be locked out of number one at the box office. That gives it a unique status: as the highest-grossing film to never reach number one. The former holder of that record was My Big Fat Greek Wedding, with $241.4 million.
Box Office: SAN ANDREAS Shakes Off Expectations
In terms of summer box office openings, it’s not exactly “the big one.” But with an estimated $53.2 million from 3,777 locations, San Andreas did wind up topping industry expectations by a significant margin. Up until last night, Warner Bros.’ earthquake disaster pic was expected to open in the $45 million range – already high enough to make it the biggest debut for star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson outside of the Fast and Furious franchise.
Box Office: AGE OF ULTRON Claims Second Victory
After posting the second-highest debut in box office history, it should come as no surprise that Avengers: Age of Ultron remained in first place over its sophomore frame. That outcome was never in doubt. In fact, if another film did manage to unseat the Avengers after one week one would have to conclude that something had gone desperately awry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
