Five ways I'm practising play this summer
This International Day of People with Disabilities, The D*List is embracing play, and what that means to us as disabled people. We called for community submissions on how people incorporate play in their lives. In this submission, Kiwikiwi Hawes shares five ways to practise play this summer. This summer I'm gonna play by practising my reo Māori, having craft days with friends, planning community events, practising whaikōrero, walking along the beach, having sex with my boyfriend, and journalling.
Aotearoa's role in forming the UNCRDP
Olivia Shivas: Kia ora, Robyn, thanks for joining us today as we talk about 3rd of December, and the UNCRPD, which, for all the disabled nerds out there, is the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. And, you were quite involved in forming that massive document so I would love to have a chat about that. Do you want to start by just introducing yourself a little bit? Robyn Hunt: Kia ora, I'm Robyn Hunt. I am a long-time disability activist, and I mean long time.
Wordplay and wrestling with puns
The first pun battle was part of the Fringe Festival. Friends bought tickets for the heat I was in, equally wanting to support me and satiate their curiosity of what a pun battle was. I sat backstage, trying to make small talk with my fellow battlers. I couldn’t tell what was sweatier – my palms or my glass of cider with condensation dripping onto the table. There were three rounds: the first, a battle between two contestants.
Anchoring as access to purposeful play
There were also challenges, for example, asking where the toilet was in the Paris underground somehow escalated to two security guards with medical packs responding to me. And that was on my way to Disneyland. I missed an important event entirely because the Universiteitsmuseum Utrecht, Utrecht University Museum, is not a museum at Utrecht University, which is the reason I could not find it.
When is ‘Nothing About Us Without Us’ going to reach academia?
“Nothing about us, without us” is a core principle of the disability rights movement. It is a phrase you will often read in the work of disability scholars, yet the reality is still a work in progress. Disability studies in Aotearoa is a small field, with few programmes spread across the country, mostly led by a single staff member in each institution. If that single person is non-disabled, can we truly say we are living up to the mantra “nothing about us, without us”?
'Are you really blind?!' A conversation with Ari Kerssens and Maretta Brown from Sight Unseen
The idea of a spontaneous summer adventure might be a nightmare for some. But Nicolina Newcombe found a way to make Outward Bound work for her, even if she broke the rules.
Royal Commission: Disability voices reflect on the Abuse in Care Inquiry final report
"If we don’t [engage], it will be too easy for the issue to have a brief period of high exposure and then be forgotten. People will inevitably move on to other issues. The media will only cover the issues raised by the Report for a short time. But those of us who experienced the abuse can’t turn off our history. The systemic deficits in New Zealand society will remain. It is up to us to demand change." - Jonathan Mosen, Survivor "It is our report, it includes our collective stories.
