1 INTRODUCTION Human activities have caused unprecedented biodiversity loss over the past 500 years (Barnosky et al., 2011; Dirzo et al., 2014), with vertebrate extinction rates more than 100 times higher than the pre-human background rate (Ceballos et al., 2015). The range and abundance of remaining vertebrate species are decreasing, especially in the tropics where most declining mammal species are found (Dirzo et al., 2014).
