Vienna, Antisemitism and Warren Kinsella
I tend to avoid conversations about Israel and Gaza, Hamas and Netanyahu. They’re no-win territory. Stinking quagmires I don’t care to wade into. If it’s a discussion about propaganda, on the other hand, something I’ve long been fascinated by, then okay, I want in. Warren Kinsella has just written a book about both. It analyses how Canadian response to war in the middle east has, he believes, been manipulated. Nigel Beale's Biblio File Podcast and Backstory is a reader-supported publication.
Halifax, Scotch, Mussolini and Mahone Bay
Yeah, I’m letting go of this — so what if America completely dominates Canada’s culture and the Canadian economy? Just so long as the place is peaceful, food and housing are plentiful and affordable, there’s a decent supply of cheap, good books, vintage magazines and teapots to buy. Why should I care? The world’s run by billionaires and giant corporations anyway. Why should it matter who creates what where?
On Fountain Pens, Teapots and Collecting
I was in Almonte recently, a pretty little town just outside of Ottawa. The main street is clogged with vintage/thrift stores. Although we were looking for magazines and teapots, in one store my eye strayed over to a glass cabinet and settled on an Esterbrook. A couple of years ago after a bit of research on fountain pens I decided that if I were ever to stumble into collecting them, I’d go with Esterbrooks.

Out West with Fascism and the Digital Divide
We were in Calgary recently. Cattle country. Doing what one does when one’s out West. Ended up at the Vintage Chophouse & Tavern - because we’re into vintage. My daughter and her husband treated us. Great dark-wood decor. Dimly lit smoke-free mobster hangout vibe. A noir night out. Put me in mind of Dashiell Hammett and the 1930s and fascism (Hammett was a noted anti-fascist, and Communist for that matter.

We were in Connecticut a few months ago for the American Ephemera Society's annual trade fair. Here's what the floor looked like When I wasn't mesmerized by it, I was noticing some pretty interesting stuff for sale, but apart from this Vogue magazine Nigel Beale's Biblio File podcast is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. for $225 there weren't a whole lot of super deals to be had on the magazine front.

Michael Lista on writing true crime, and getting optioned
When you think of it, content aside, there’s actually quite a bit more to love in a magazine than there is in a book. Take photographs. The January 7, 1966 issue of Life magazine that I recently picked up, features a story on Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. It’s plastered with a slew of great shots by Richard Avedon.

John Sargent on beating Amazon & Google, & saving Books
John Sargent was too young to fight in WW ll but he spent years fighting Amazon and Google in the trenches on behalf of publishers and authors, protecting copyright and defending book prices. John grew up on a cattle ranch in Wyoming. Over forty years he worked at six publishing companies, including Simon & Schuster where he was the publisher of the Children’s Division, and Dorling Kindersley where he was CEO. For the last half of his career he was the CEO of Macmillan.
On Book Coaches and Beautiful Czechs
My apologies to those of you who may have missed listening to the podcast over the past couple of months. During this time I’ve been subsumed in a horrific application process, one putatively designed to help foreigners get long-term visas to live in the Czech Republic. The experience rendered me dumbstruck. Not that I was idle in the dumbness. Check out the magnificent covers on these Czech paperbacks I've been collecting with a friend, Nigel Beale is a reader-supported publication.

Andrew Franklin "the best of the best in U.K. publishing"
James Daunt calls him "the best of the best in U.K. publishing, constantly challenging the industry to move on when it drags its feet." Listen to my conversation with Andrew Franklin to learn why. Andrew is founder and, until recently, publisher of Profile Books, an award-winning British independent publishing house which launched in 1996.

Nigel Beale in Milan, Italy's Book Publishing Capital
My friend Michel Gauthier and I got together in Milan last April to storm the bookstores. Easy flight down from Prague it was. Michel and I often used to do book-runs together in Montreal. He travels a lot and buys loads of photobooks where and whenever he happens to touch down (listen to our Biblio File conversation here about the ramifications of this…

Prague, Podcasting, Book Designers, Wisdom and Red.

RISE, Reading Spas, and Bookselling's Conflicting Models.
With my fresh George Soros haircut tingling in the breeze I flew into Prague from Frankfurt just in time to catch the first-ever RISE Booksellers Conference. It was March, 2023. To kick things off I joined a group of booksellers, mostly European, under 'the tail of the horse' in front of the national museum in Wensaslaus Square - a favoured local meeting spot - for a RISE-sponsored walking tour of the city.
